I have a 13-14 year old shepherd mix, and lately the thing has just been crapping all over the place. In the three years since we've adopted him he hasn't had a single accident inside. We came home last Saturday, shit on the floor. Came home from work tonight, shit on the floor. We're pretty active with him - we walk him 4-5 days a week, and I have a fairly big back yard for him to run around in, so he gets exercise. We haven't changed anything food related, and in fact, this is really the only thing we've seen as far as a change in him.

Is this just a sign of old age in him and we're near the end? Or could this be something that can be fixed? We're taking him to the vet tomorrow or Wednesday to hopefully get some answers there, but I figure it never hurts to ask some of you who've had dogs.
Just thinking about this today... So how'd things go with your sheppard? What'd the vet say?

Yeah, my bad for not updating this....

Dog is better. Vet put him on some medication, and he's eating better than he was before. We're getting him a bit more active as well, sometimes doing the morning and night walks.

Good to hear! No more soiling the floor?

Sorry to hear that, it is always tough to lose a fur baby, but when it is time it is time.
Yeah, the wife saw him pissing blood the other day, and it was (amazingly) pretty much exactly what @Aesopian posted in this thread. Beyond that he was having issues with his hind legs, and that moved to one of his front legs and he was just a mess today. We probably should have done it on Saturday.

We always wait too long hoping for the best, and we always regret it. It sucks, hang in there.

On the other hand. My in laws had a dog I hated, Sport was a rescue mutt, and he ripped out the throat of their old dog Teddy, killed him in the kitchen in front of the whole family, that happened before I met my wife, so I just heard the story. I hated Sport because he was a terrible dog, a total piece of shit, he didn't like me much either. The in laws used to feed the dog the same thing they would eat, one time they asked me to fix Sport a plate of the same roast beef we had, I did, and he wouldn't eat it, mom in law says "you forgot to put gravy on the roast beef", she covered the meat and potatoes in gravy and Sport ate it, think about that, the dog didn't want the delicious roast beef unless it had gravy, **** that dog.

He got old and sick, should have been put down a year earlier, waited way too long, the dog was gross smelled bad, slime dripping out his ass, @Warden of the Northeast levels of gross. Wife asks me if I could take him to the vet to end it, I'm all, hell yes, it will be a pleasure! About time, I've wanted to kill that ****** for years! I cover my car in old blankets and towels that I can just throw away. I pick up that POS, witness the in laws tear fest and drive off, for the first time I can tell Sport what I think of him, so I do. I get to the vet and hand them a check and start to walk out, they ask "do you want some time with the dog?" I say "no thanks", the vet looked a little stunned, while I walk out happy as an O'clam. I get the befouled towels and dump them in a nearby dumpster.

It was a good day. There exceptions to every rule.
