Award-winning actor Philip Seymour Hoffman was found dead Sunday afternoon in his New York City apartment, a law-enforcement official said.

The New York Police Department is investigating, and the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner to determine exact cause of death. The official said Mr. Hoffman, 46 years old, was found dead at his apartment at 35 Bethune St. in the West Village neighborhood of Manhattan.

Mr. Hoffman won the Academy Award for Best Actor for the 2005 film, "Capote.'

I remember when I still lived in Chicago there was a dj on wxrt who would always say "another stupid death" when a musician OD'd or wrecked their car while drunk. And that's how I feel, sad and a little bit pissed off that someone so young and so gifted could die in such a stupid pointless way. Then again if it wasn't drugs I'll be back to retract my statement.

The chance that it was a planned suicide can't be ruled out, although it would be an odd way of committing it.

Who cares what leads to a drug overdose. The point is you are risking your life every time you put a harmful substance that uses a needle into your body.
