I liked PSH, thought he became seriously over-rated in the mid-00s, but that was besides the point since he was still a great actor. Sad to see him pass.

Ahhhh, Boogie Nights, Synecdoche, New York, The Master.... a phenomenal talent. And part of the one of the funniest moments I had in college.

RIP "Phillip Semen Hoffmore"

I did like him in several films, but there will only be one forever scarred into my memory.

You really should not watch this clip at all. It is one of the most depraved films I ever fell in love with.

Seriously...don't do it.

I knew of him and remember seeing a few movies he was in but never really had an opinion about him either way.

For me, he was always one of those guys that I would see and say “Oh yea, that’s that one guy I’ve seen before in other movies.”

Looking at his IMDB page, I’ve seen very few movies he’s been in and the ones I have seen I just barely remember him.

This is my shit. Brilliant. One of those very rare moments for me watching a flick where I had to rewind and watch again.

I hope the high was worth it.

I've dealt with enough addicts to know that it usually isn't the "high" they're chasing -- casual drug users, yes, but not the "hard-core" addicts -- it's an attempt to suppress some sort of emotional trauma that they're doing a very poor job dealing with by other methods.

bummer, we lost another junkie.

Junkies often contribute just as much to society as anyone else. Pick a discipline, look up the major names in that area, and you'll find more than enough representation of "junkies" making significant breakthroughs than one would expect.

Look, I'm not defending his choices, I think doing heroin is amongst the dumbest decisions anyone could possibly make; but to wash away a person's accomplishments or to minimize the tragedy of the loss of those close to him and to the world in general is kind of ridiculous and unsympathetic. Does everyone that commits suicide also deserve such ire (since that is essentially what excessive use of heavy drugs is)? Perhaps, but I'd be willing to examine their personal situation before passing such judgement.

As a child of two different types of addicts, I can tell you that I don't hold much sympathy for the addicts themselves and their "plight". My sympathy goes to their loved ones who get to wonder when they'll finally self-destruct.

I don't disagree with that sentiment at all. But painting all addicts with such a wide brush isn't a reasonable way to think about it either. Some can't be/don't want to be helped, and many don't deserve the effort of others, but there are some that are decent people who have simply lost their way or succumb to an "easier" way of dealing with their issues.

For example: I've taken one of my old high school buddies to rehab three times, and once to an asylum (or whatever they call them now). He's always been a decent person, and I think the world would be a worse place without him. Sure, he did an inordinate amount of stupid and selfish things throughout the years of his using; but I wouldn't deprive him of the future he can build simply because he fucked up a decade of his life.

I don't know. I guess that, as jaded as I am (I have a very poor opinion of humanity in general), I'm almost always willing to give someone a chance at redemption.

Damn, that sucks.

Also, people in here seem to have some bizarre ideas about what leads to the tragedy of a drug overdose.

There's nothing tragic about drug overdoses.
