Indoor sports are tricky. Low light, high movement. The more expensive lenses would obviously be better, especially those with a constant aperture (i.e. the f-stop does not change when zooming). A fixed focus, or prime lens might be your best compromise. Although you cannot zoom, they are usually much faster and more economical. Something like an 85 or 100 mm fixed focus lens might be something worth trying.
I often head to Londondrugs here and buy a new lens to "try out", 30 day return policy. Well worth taking home a lens to try and not be shy about exchanging or returning.
