The Coast Guard in times of war or whatever, become a part of the Navy, at least that's what I have been told.
I'd like to see him home as well. The charges are trumped up BS.
Having said that, he's a dual citizen, was aware of the travel warnings for dual citizens to Iran and travelled anyway. Iran has a habit of kidnapping US citizens regardless, why would you go if you knew your probably going to get arrested or kidnapped? I see this as worse decision making than the 3 peace nicks that were recently held on similar charges. I could say they were naive. Not with this guy.
Doesn't mean I want our Navy boarding vessels, kidnapping crew, and holding them for ransom. Thats just idiotic.
From a quasi-ethical standpoint I acree with a "prisoner exchange" if you will, but since he is a dual citizen with Iran, he doesn't get US consular protection in Iran and is expected to know and obey their laws--even if the law is trumped up and bullshit.
If the situation was revered, we'd want Iran to stay out of our hair if a dual-citizen from Iran/US broke one of our laws (even if the law was completely rediculous and trumped up).
I get what was said about by I think it was Jako, but I keep going back to my first thought when reading this... what the **** is the coast guard doing there. I just just see some kid pulling up an Iranian guy thinking, I didn't sign up for this shit.
Interesting, I did not know that, I just assumed from my past experience (mostly stuff hear from tv so it doesn't really count) that the coast guard was for protecting our coast. And while it's obvious that yes, they do, I didn't realize they could be deployed all over. Very interesting. Wasn't Bush or someone in the coast guard and got made fun of for it?they are like the national guard and can be deployed overseas if needed but I think they are voluntary, unlike the guard. and this is according to the internet

Well if that was Iran's case, I guess next time an Iranian ship gets taken by pirates, we just won't render any assistance.
While I think Iran is just grandstanding here, the point I was trying to make was if someone from Iran because a citizen of the US and retained Iranian citizenship, and then broke a US law that was not a big deal in Iran, wouldn't we be telling Iran to go to hell? After all by becoming an american citizen the person in question should be familiar with out laws and customs enough to know not to break them.
Still, I think it would be an apropriate response to not render assistance, but then agian, if we're really better than them on any level we'll realize that chances are the Iranian ship is just normal people like the guy about to be executed and not the assclowns running the show.
