NHL waits for all other series to finish.

Both Hawks and Wild took 6 games, the only game 7 left is in the eastern conf. tonight.

There is no logical reason to wait this long, series should have begun today.

As I said, NHL has a rule that they wait for all other series to conclude before starting the next round. It is what it is.

These people are idiots, or at the very least poor marketers.

They could have scheduled round 2 so as not to directly compete with the NFL draft, and did the opposite.

They dodged Round 1 of the NFL Draft, which is the night that's most important to avoid.

And, no, you can't start Round 2 of another series when Round 1 hasn't finished. Even if it's the other conference. Because that could seriously **** up one team when we get to the Cup Final.

No league does that.

My thoughts on the matter:

It seems that the home team would like to play at 7:00pm or 7:30pm. That's fine, it just means that there is some variance. If you're on the west coast and watching an eastern conference team, you'll have to bail work around 4:00pm. If you're on the east coast and want to watch a west coast game, be prepared to stay up until 10:30. This is not a new thing.

The problem with the playoffs past--especially in the 1st round was that once the NHL went national broadcast for all of the games, they only had so many channels they could air them on NHLN, Vs, CNBC, and just recently USA (which ironically the canadian teams played on). With so many games going into OT (thank parity), it used to be one team was screwed if they were out west--you'd have to wait for a who-cares game out east to finish before you got to watch your team. At least this year they were a little bit better by showing the start of a game screwed by OT in another on NHLN, but it's still not ideal--especially if you want to record it.

I think that's why they put the Western games much later--specifically the central matchup more in-line with mountain time or pacific time--more time for then Eastern game to finish.

Personally, I think what the NHL should do is use the 4 networks to effect: even in the 1st round only 4 games will happen on any given day, and instead of doubling up games on a network, just assign 2 series to a network (each on opposite days) and have them start 7:00 or 7:30 home team time. Once the 1st round is over either eliminate 2 networks or each network has a series, they just skip a day. For the conference finals, throw everything on Vs. or NBC. For the Stanley Cup finals, I'd say throw everything on NBC and screw those who want to watch the latest relaity TV show du jure, but that's just me ;). Likley it will be Vs weeknuing and NBC weekends.

P.S. Yes, I still call it Vs. I occassionaly call it OLN. Deal with it. You don't see me calling it the Willis Tower, do you? Of course not. That's as wrong as Bea Arthur Porn.

The NBA does.

The Bulls would have started Saturday had they won Game 5... Many others series are holding their Game 7's on Saturday/Sunday if there is one.

Thats all fucked up to me. I love how the nhl doesnt do that. One of the benefits for winning a series early should be the added rest time before the next one starts. Although i know that some players actually find it more difficult to rest too long. But if you are a team with some injury issues then a longer rest time can def be to a teams advantage.

I didnt know the nba did this. I dont remember that being the case back in the 90s when i watched it. Or maybe they did and i never noticed or cared?

It really only happens when two teams that will meet each other in the next round sweep or win in 5 in the first round. And then obviously other series drag out longer.

It happened as recently as 2010.

2 second round series begin Thursday night, coinciding with NFL round 1.

The remainder I understand, barring what started this thread and was demonstrated by a 1:08 AM OT weeknight finish.

If it's a game 1 vs. game 7 overlap on the same day it makes some sense--even though not much IMHO. Even though I'm not much of a basketball fan anymore I do hold the players in high athletic esteem (Below Rugby, NHL, and Lacrosse, above MLS, and way above NFL and MLB), but I do have to say that IMHO I think the NHL is way more taxing, physically. I think that's a reason why it's not even atempted in the NHL.
