It would take a few years under Friedman to build a contender since he focuses more on the farm system than the FA market.

My favorite teams
  1. Chicago Cubs
  1. Minnesota United FC
  1. Chicago Bulls
  1. Chicago Bears
  1. Chicago Blackhawks
  1. Notre Dame Fighting Irish
If Friedman wants to win, he'd stay in TB.

not true he only focuses on the farm because he doesnt have the money to get any free agents look at his pay roll in Tampa compared to ours. It may take a few years because our pitching sucks but I suspect that he will build through the farm especially pitching which is fine with me. As well as a few key free agents. Maybe not this year but the year after or the year after that. I just hope we focus on teh farm system first and get some pitching in the system.

But Fridman is the guy I want pay him whatever he asks for and give him better resources in 5 years we should be in a great situation.

Just because a guy manages well a small market team, doesn't mean he will be able to have the same success when he has a giant checkbook to work with. Omar Minaya worked tons of magic in Montreal, also build through the draft and youth system, and developed tons of all-stars and hall of famers, but when the Mets fired him with pretty much a unlimited payroll, he had far less success.

I do like Friedman, i am just pointing out, that he could be a major flop in a major market. He works with little payroll, but also with little pressure.

True that he didn't have the money, but he'd be an unproven hire in regards to signing FAs. He doesn't have much experience with that and he could be a gambler which might not be the best route to go for the Cubs. They need a proven GM with experience building the farm system and in the free agent market IMO.

I don't think anyone would know what Friedman would do in Chicago until he's actually hired and does it  I don't think he'd suck at his job though.

That's basically what I was getting at. He'd be a bit of a gamble for a big market club. Like Northside slugger alluded to and gave an example of with Minaya. You just never know. He could be wildly successful or he could flop.

The greater point is that while the Cubs made a great but still ill-advised trade, the Rays knew that they could live without Matt Garza and still contend with the help of an epic collapse by the Red Sox
