The greater point is that while the Cubs made a great but still ill-advised trade, the Rays knew that they could live without Matt Garza and still contend with the help of an epic collapse by the Red Sox

The Rays wouldn't be better with Matt Garza in their rotation? Please.

If we had traded Hillickson for Garza, you'd have a point.

The point isn't talent but cost. Hellickson makes less than a tenth of what Garza makes this year. Same production. Just sayin'.

^^ Gotcha.

Back to the topic, whom ever is named General Manager, i hope he lays down his foundation right from the get-go and also fires Quade and brings in his own manager.

Outside of Friedman and Epstein, who are the other realistic candidates? Hahn, Beane? Anyone else?

I've heard Cashman's name, but I think it's unlikely he'll leave NY. Everything I read suggests he wants to stay.

I think Francona is gone, and Theo won't wait long to make the move, and him moving quickly firing the manager, thus putting all the blame on Terry, it will take pressure off Epstein and he'll keep his job. Even without a collapse, i think it was time for Francona to leave, i don't believe in baseball for managers being in one place for too long. I think your message gets lost after a while. Last few years, it's been hard to get rid of Francona, but this is a perfect opportunity.

Cashman and the Steinbrenner brothers butt heads all the time. Cashman's contract ends. Wouldn't shock me if Cashman decides to leave for his own good, or, it wouldn't shock me if Cashman does indeed want to stay but Hank kicks him to the curb.

I agree. I think it was LaRussa who said 7 years is about the max a manager should stay in one place before he starts to get "stale". Francona had a good run in Boston and if he does leave and wants to manage still, I'm sure it won't be long until he shows up somewhere else.

Yeah, he won't be available for long, unless he wants to sit the year out, clear his mind, and collect $$$ by going to ESPN or MLB Network for a year. Either way, i agree.

Maybe Francona can come here and use his curse breaking magic. We sure could use it any time he is willing to give it.
