I have a computer and I have windows 7 home premium installed. I would like to erase everything on it and even the O.S. on it. Now, can I successfully install windows 7 in it again? I don't have a windows 7 installation disc or anything. Under my laptop, there is the product key. Is there anyway of knowing if I can do this without a disc?

They are going to move this thread to the gaming forum just a heads up. Also, Im not a huge computer guy but most likely Ares or Crys will probably answer your question.

You need to create backup disks or a backup file on a flash drive before you do this. If you don't you're going to have a tough time. That's #1 from their just google clean install of windows 7

I am not totally sure, but I think without the disk you'll have quite the hard time installing windows 7. If Crys or Ares responds in a different way than me, just go with what they say.

Usually a PC will come with either a "Recover Disc" which is just a copy of your given OS or the copy of the OS is on a "Recovery" partition of your hard drive.

If you truly want to wipe the entire hard drive and install the OS fresh you need a copy of your Windows 7 Home Premium on a disc so you can install off the disc after reformatting (wiping clean) your hard drive during the install.

Since you have a valid product key I can get you a copy of Windows 7 Home Premium as an ISO (disc image file) but you would need to burn the ISO to a blank DVD to use as your install disc.

I just need to know if you would need the 32 bit or 64 bit version of Windows 7 Home Premium?

Let me know and I can start downloading the copy of Windows you need.

Download and burn an install DVD(make sure it's bootable) of the version of windows that matches your license. Or make a bootable USB drive(should be 6gb+, plenty of how-tos online). It's a piracy gray area, but then you at least aren't high and dry if your OS/drive goes to shit. Your copy will be legal, just the method that you retrieved the copy is questionable).

By the way, you can get the same performance from a heavily cluttered copy of windows, as a fresh install, if you spend the time to clean it up. Sometimes better performance, because you can strip out obsolete files.

Yeah it is very much a piracy grey.... cause without the license you cannot use it exactly the same.

In any case we have MSDN subscriptions at work and I can snag an ISO for any version of Windows and throw it on my FTP for download, no need to even torrent.

Your laptop might have a recovery partition on it w/ the OS. If not download it like Crys said and use your valid product key.

Edit> Nm, looks like it's already been covered.

Now I have a screen at says no bootable device. I unplugged the drive and plugged it back in but no luck. Do I need a new drive? If so, can I just install windows 7 with my copy or do I need a to shine recovery disk as well?

Sounds like you haven't used a proper desktop distro since 2008. It's easier to install than windows/macos now. :D

Guilty as charged. It's been awhile outside of some virtual machine installations for specific uses.

It's a 64 bit version. I think I fucked yo though. I tried recovering. As in deleting everything on the hard drive except the partitions. Then I got an error saying it couldn't find a cd/dvd drive. So I was going to burn the recovery media to a dvd. Now, it won't even boot up. It says, no bootable driver.

Linux mint's installer is also a live-disc. Meaning, you can boot the disc and troubleshoot problems without installing anything. Also, try-before-you-commit.

It's good to have a live-disc laying around anyways. Helpful to recover data in such conditions, like your own.

Do you have any other computers you could use just to burn an install disc?
