Just kicking around a few ideas for trades that could possible happen before the season starts.
Trade 1) Cubs send Patrick Wisdom to Boston for Kenley Jansen and Yordanny Monegro. Boston is looking for a right handed power bat and looking to unload Jansen. Cubs have been looking for a pen arm. If/when Bellinger is re-signed, there is really no spot for Wisdom. Cubs can absorb all of Jansen's contract for 24. Monegro is only 21 but hasn't pitched above A+ level yet. He has some promise and would be a toss in in favor of Boston not eating any of Jansen's contract. It saves Boston about 14M overall.
Trade 2) Cubs send Nico Hoerner and Jefferson Rojas to Miami for Luis Arraez. This is simply an exercise in speculation. The negative for the Cubs is lesser D at 2B compared to Arraez and breaking up arguably the best defensive MI in baseball. The upside for the Cubs is the increased offensive output at solidified lead off hitter. Ultimately, I probably wouldn't pull the trigger on this deal but thought it could be worth tossing out into the ether.
Trade 3 - Cubs send Morel, Wicks, Alcantara, and Rojas to Miami for Luzardo. - Cubs get a legit #2 starter with 3 years of control but do have to part with good prospects in return. Miami is looking for SS and close to MLB ready OF in return for Luzardo. Morel and Wick are necessary to even out the value. Plus if the Cubs got silly and signed Matt Chapman, Morel has a lot less value on the MLB team versus being traded.
Just a few ideas to discuss until something better comes along.
