I have a sense of history in the USA, I just don't particularly enjoy white washed history. Got enough of that in school.

It's a TV documentary, airing on PBS. At best it will be "History Light".

No I actually don't really hate much of anything. But to cherry pick stories and pass it off as some sort of comprehensive view of that war, ignoring so much, I'll take a pass on that. Not worth it for me. Like anyone else who would comment on it, just one person's view. Feel free to disagree.

I know your anti-American/anti-military feelings come from personal family experiences, but other people could have experienced the same situation and and had the opposite view. Most people would be thanking their lucky stars instead of consuming themselves with bitterness and anger. Not disputing that you have a right to your opinion and feelings, but what you have said in the past led me to believe that you were encouraged to adopt that opinion instead of thinking for yourself. If you want to hate something do it for the right reasons based on your own personal experience and thought process. I even once suggested that you experience life in other countries since you seem so unhappy. And I am not saying it in a bitchy way like "if you don't like America, get the **** out/" I just mean working or living in another country for awhile might give you a different perspective on life and where true happiness for you exists. I worry about you sometimes and i mean that sincerely.

I have to be in the right mindset to sit and watch his films, which is close to never. I've watched almost all of The Civil War and Baseball. I have The War at home still in the shrink wrap (I caught some of it on PBS). Committing to a Ken Burns film takes time-- the kind of time that would pass to realize when you're finished that you are a grandfather, and your favorite cat has been dead 22 years.

The footage gathered is great, and the time to put together a film series like this is daunting. I understand Variable to a certain degree. This series will cover a certain theme, and perhaps leave out quite a bit-- but that is for another filmmaker to undertake.

Consider me disputing...

A simple post to let others know on a forum that a piece of entertainment might be of interest to another is met with some arrogant comments with Variable as the be all end all judge of history?

Pardon the **** outta me but the opinion is garbage. To think the rest of us needed this pointless rhetoric?

Sorry L83... Just another thread and discussion that Variable can crush any fun in a few simple keystrokes.

WW Two is one war I don't think Americans have to have a large number of regrets about. The Nazis and the Japanese forces committed unspeakable war crimes during World War Two. Mass executions and death camps were the tactics of choice for the Nazis, specifically targeting civilians including the attempted extermination of European jews. They brutally attacked sovereign nations with no justification. The Japanese also executed numerous civilians and committed unconscionable war crimes against the people of Nanking in China including the use of biological weapons such as the plague against civilians. They also tortured and murdered tens of thousands of US troops, highlighted by the Batan Death March and numerous other atrocities including the killing of innocent civilians in Hawaii during the Pearl Harbor attack. Was America perfect in this war? No, Japanese internment camps were not acceptable. And a debate about incendiary bombing and the atomic bombs is perfectly acceptable. And I believe is discussed in the War, although I haven't seen the whole thing. But none of those choices were made by the troops, or can you say they necessarily the wrong choices. But there is no debate on our enemies, they were evil. If they weren't who was?

Sorry. I didn't mean to stir up trouble. I just don't understand why they had a negative reaction to what happened instead of a positive one. I won't relate the story cause it isn't my story to tell. I just assume most people know what I'm talking about. There are many things wrong with this country, but there are many things right about it too and I'd still rather live here than take my chances anywhere else in the world. Sorry Larmers if I contributed to the downfall of your thread.

I don't see why watching this film would be bad or negative.

I will always look at these as tales of our resilience. I take great bound in our ability to rebound especially from Pearl Harbor, but with my background it might come off as a bit bias

It's not like I'm bashing things just to bash them. Those were just my thoughts on the series. Disagree with them, fine I don't care. Want to discuss it, by all means I'll discuss it. It's a fucking message board. A for-um. It's so ridiculous the reactions to some things like this in which not everyone sees things as what is considered "normal". Get over myself over....what? Force myself to like it? Pretend? What do you want me to do? If the reaction to things like this is going to constantly be "Argh, he doesn't like the things he's supposed to like!" by all means, please, I'm literally begging you, put me on ignore. I'm not forcing anyone to read my posts.

It's funny how people think I am here, how they think I'm so angry, when it's the complete opposite. Why people think I would lie about that, I don't really understand. Hate is such a strong, strong word. I mean, if I were to go by the posts on here I'm pretty sure some people have more hate for the Canucks or McDonough or some petty hockey bullshit than I do of everything else combined. But that's just the way it goes. If you're vocal about your feelings on certain topics and the mainstream of it labels that as the "wrong" feelings to have, well, you've put yourself in a corner. Oh well. Again, don't like it, please ignore me.

Other than that, I don't particularly like documentaries like "The War" because to tackle the ocean of a topic that is WWII, I've found the films that seem to do it best focus and dissect on a singular or just a couple aspects of it. To try and cover most or all of it, it's just spreading yourself too thin and you're bound to leave extremely important things out of it, whether due to being unaware or simply because of logistical reasons.

Not sure if that was directed at anyone in particular or not. In my post I said you were entitled to your opinion and your feelings. Not saying you are wrong, just that your relative had a much different reaction to the matter than most. I'm just saying I don't understand for that reason alone why you feel the way you do. Because if things turned out differently, you might not have existed? Do you carry some kind of inherited guilt for that?
