It's been four years since Mark Prior threw a pitch in the major leagues, but he hopes to play at the highest level once again, according to Tracy Ringolsby of FOX Sports. Prior will work out at USC on Wednesday, when "most major league teams are expected to have a scout in attendance." Prior, still just 29, signed with the Padres last year, but didn't appear in a game and was handed his release a few months later.

Prior put together a college pitching career that few pitchers before (Ben McDonald) or since (Stephen Strasburg) have matched. Drafted second overall behind Joe Mauer in the 2001 draft, he soon became a key member of the Cubs' rotation. Prior pitched to a 2.43 ERA in 211.1 innings as a 22-year-old in 2003 before shoulder problems derailed his career.

Most teams will be in attendance. I'd imagine that he'd prefer to re-sign with the Cubs perhaps, but you never know.

I would seriously not mind Jim Hendry forking out another 4 million to Mark Prior for 2 years...That's how desperate the team is...

Even though that does not sound smart, pitching is not a problem.

Really?! I know pitching isn't the main concern, but...

Ryan Dempster = solid
Carlos Silva = solid (but a ticking timebomb in terms of his production)
Ted Lilly = soft (vastly underperforming)
Randy Wells = bad
Tom Gorzelanny = soft (pitching decent, but he's soft)

With Big Z most likely out of the picture after this season, taking a flier on Mark Prior doesn't really hurt us that much.

I'd assume he'd take a Minor League comntract, so it wouldn't hurt. Then we can put him in pen or starter or simply trade him if/once he proves himself.

If he gets anything, it will be a mlc.

I only pointed it out because some were saying it'd be stupid.

I miss Prior, he was my favorite Cub back in the day.

I got his and Dusty Baker's autograph in 2004 when I got to go onto the field and Prior was hurt

I typed mlc. They can stand for both but I thought people would realize what I meant. I was too lazy to write it out.

Don't worry, I realized it.
