Estimated $430 price tag.

If the price is true I gotta say it surprises me, considering I think PS3 launched at $699 I believe.

About that PS4 Price Rumor…

avt-small.jpg
previous story) and that it will come with a DualShock 3 shaped controller—which Kotaku previously reported.

(Meanwhile, the Nikkei ran its own story on the PS4, saying what we've previously heard: that it's ditching the Cell processor and is using processors from another company. The Nikkei also added that the PS4 will use the Gaikai cloud service, which shouldn't come as a surprise.)

The original Asahi story goes on to say that the PS4 will launch for the end of year sales war in Japan and the US, and that it looks to be priced over ¥40,000. (That's US$427, but assume it would translate to US$400.) There was no specific US pricing in the original article. The original Japanese text in the Asahi piece (価格は4万円を超えるとみられる) is rather vague, as "to mirareru" (とみられる) can mean "is believed", "is expected" or even "is considered to be". In short, this seems like speculation. Yet, this is the bit of news everyone is latching on to.

When major Japanese newspapers like Asahi or Nikkei run rumors, they are usually pretty solid. Thing is, there's not much here that hasn't already been leaked before. And like I previously said, the price point doesn't seem rock solid. Remember how much the original PS3 cost? The 20GB version was US$499, while the 60GB version was $599. Now the Asahi News is saying PS4 will cost over $400. That's not only kind of vague, but rather obvious!

This afternoon, Sony commented to Famitsu on the Asahi story, saying, "SCE has nothing to announce regarding this matter. No comment even on whether this story is true or false."

For more about the next PlayStation, read Kotaku's previous coverage here and here.

I just hope the controllers don't cost $80+ each, which they probably will if they do in fact have a touch surface on them.

I think I am passing on the PS4. The PS exclusives never seem to woo me (with the exception of Heavy Rain) I bought my PS3 mainly as a blu-ray player. Also all my friends are on Xbox. Lastly I had the WORST luck picking decent PS2 games, sure I played some of the hits but mostly I couldnt pick'em to save my life so I got turned off from the PS.

As a PC gamer I do look at those specs and kinda smirk, consoles due to cost constraints never are made for the future, 8gb of mem is the PC standard now but 5 years from now 8gb isnt going to cut it. That's what I hate about consoles. The 360 has 512mb of mem and it isnt enough for the new interface (now old but you get my drift)

Depending on price I will get a PS4, but not when it comes out. I'll wait till there is games that they are only making for ps4 and not PS3... right now it doesn't seem to have any exclusive PS4 games that I want.

I probably won't buy it right away either since most of the games I play will be with friends who will still be playing on the ps3. Might grab it when BF4 comes out.

But even then, are you sure it's going to be a PS4 exclusive? I haven't seen anything announced that way yet.

No, it won't be, but it will likely support 64 players vs only 32 on the ps3. That and the graphics should be a big step up.

Too many questions in the details. I do so little gaming on it that like Supra, mine PS3 is nothing more then the "media center" with amazon prime viewer, netflix, bluray, etc. I have been bit in the past with buying consoles on release date. No need to here for PS4 for me.

The best thing to do at this point, really, is to watch the E3 presentation in mid-June. Sony should give more details at that time. E3 will be June 11-13 this year in Los Angeles.

That said, from what I have seen so far, especially with them bringing back Diablo 3, I am a bit disappointed, but I will hope things will change in the long run. I'm basically going to wait til June before I decide.

But that's the catch really... with this gen we aren't going to see the same change in graphics as we did from 2-3... They're saying that they will be able to do more with the graphics but their is a depreciating return on this system. And the development costs are going to be too high to really jump to a new level. This is the graphic that I saw to explain why it will be better but not monumental.

A lot of the advancement will probably come in the ancillary things like being able to run more objects on the screen at once. So in that regard you will see a more immerse environment. And be able to handle things like 64 live players at once, although that's more a server thing but you get what I mean. This can be show with the demo of the 1 mil blue things falling that they showed during the launch. I think you're going to have a lot more environmental flutter like rain, snow, waves things like that than you are super high def graphics. It will make a big difference but it's going to take developers a lot of time and money to catch up to it. The PS4 is going to be all about making it social more than better graphics. The streaming, live look ins, video capture... ect... it's basically going to be a PS3 with a bunch more features and power.

From what I've read, part of the reason they went to x86 architecture is so developers wouldn't have to learn a new system. They should be able to develop super rich games right out of the gate since it will be similar code to PC development.

I think the biggest differences, will be like you said, the environmental stuff as well as lighting. Those play a huge roll in the look of games. On top of that you'll have more power for physics based stuff so more realistic driving sims, explosions, etc. It would be really cool if PS4 games could be played online vs PC players since it will be the same architecture, but PC players would kick console players asses in anything that utilizes a keyboard/mouse.

Yeah, I know the x86 architecture should help, but the talk about utilizing and allocating the resources of it and the ram is going to be a decent sized step. They may have 8 cores now, but one of them is reserved for background functions, one is reserved for streaming... ect... so while it's similar, it's still different because they are adding all this BS they are adding is going to make them have to change the way they do thing to accomodate all the new features. One big one I can think of is that feature where you can pause a game and go to a different one and then come back to it. Can't remember what they are calling it. To me though, when I say development, I don't mean to get a game working on the system, I mean to max out the potential of the system. I think that will still take a little while unless one company just sits down and dedicates a title to it. What I love most about it for me is that I'm a fan of the open world games. And having this much more power, and the ability to boost the environments like it does should really really upgrade those environments to get rid of the number one thing I hate about them... load screens. Whether it's fall out when it skipped every now and then as you ran across to a different area, or it's Skyrim that took forever to load ever time you went in a building... This is what I want to see removed. Background loading and the resources to hold more of the environment in the RAM... we'll see though.

That's a good graphic illustration MH.
I wish I could take more credit for it, but I got it from this article which is also very good. http://kotaku.com/5986555/ready-for-some-football-on-the-ps4-not-really-

But it stuck with me so I thought I would share. I like it too. It's very interesting indeed to me.

Yeah, Kotaku made a point to confirm it with the Sony guys the day after the launch. They won't have always on unless the publisher does it, and they will support used games.

I am not a gamer at all, however I do enjoy watching other play. We will see when things settle down where I am at. I may need a media center and if there is an all in one machine that does blu ray, netflix/hulu/whatever streaming thing there is, maybe a video game or two then I would maybe buy.

I do like the Wii, as it can play River City Ransom.
