I am not a gamer at all, however I do enjoy watching other play. We will see when things settle down where I am at. I may need a media center and if there is an all in one machine that does blu ray, netflix/hulu/whatever streaming thing there is, maybe a video game or two then I would maybe buy.

I do like the Wii, as it can play River City Ransom.
I dont' know if you know anything about the PS4, but one of their main new features is that when you turn on your PS4 and a friend is playing a game, you can click on them and link to their screen and watch them play live and talk and video chat with them. It's supposed to be really need and all that but I"m not sure. Sounds like it might be something you would like though... also, You are supposed to be able to jump in and play a part of the game for the person, but I don't know how this would work unless you owned the game too, because someone could just join a person playing a game and play it without buying it?

Yeah that seems pretty cool. Basically it would come down to what all the machine can do. Gaming a bit, thats cool. Stream shit, that would be handy as I am thinking I wont be getting satellite or cable. The only live tv i need to see is hockey games. Blu ray, sure. If it can replace all those things separately then it would be worth pert near 400 bucks to me.

It will stream anything you want, including a much improved web browser over their previous one... the current one isn't too bad. It will have blue ray... NHL Center Ice App if you drop cable all together, streaming music apps... oohh and hopefully it will game a bit. haha. I fear it will only have a 500 gb HD though... which sounds like a lot, but games coming out are already 40+ gb, and getting bigger... no wonder they let you play them while they download. You'll have the thing beat before it's down downloading.

Not where you live. It's blacked out in the home market.

That's my concern. If I can find online stream it wouldnt be so bad. Plus I wouldnt have to deal with Pat and Eddie.

But that's the catch really... with this gen we aren't going to see the same change in graphics as we did from 2-3... They're saying that they will be able to do more with the graphics but their is a depreciating return on this system. And the development costs are going to be too high to really jump to a new level. This is the graphic that I saw to explain why it will be better but not monumental.

A lot of the advancement will probably come in the ancillary things like being able to run more objects on the screen at once. So in that regard you will see a more immerse environment. And be able to handle things like 64 live players at once, although that's more a server thing but you get what I mean. This can be show with the demo of the 1 mil blue things falling that they showed during the launch. I think you're going to have a lot more environmental flutter like rain, snow, waves things like that than you are super high def graphics. It will make a big difference but it's going to take developers a lot of time and money to catch up to it. The PS4 is going to be all about making it social more than better graphics. The streaming, live look ins, video capture... ect... it's basically going to be a PS3 with a bunch more features and power.

The advancement is in the engines doing different things

Yeah I know the tech demo is 2 years old but at the time the power to run that thing was insane, I think the box running it had 4 GFX cards and all of them were best on the market at the time (so about 2k worth of vid cards)

There was an old start up that was really ahead of its time, that was doing this with PC games, but the infrastructure just really wasnt there yet. What it did was allow you to play PC games on their hardware over the net. i.e. you can play the latest and greatest PC games on the highest graphics, on your low end laptop via the net. There was just alot of infrastructure issues concept issues and it collapsed I think on that mass scale the technology wasnt and maybe still isnt here yet.

But 1 peer to 1 peer, over a decent connection, should be no problem to do this. remote control /screen sharing is not a new concept and has been around for a long time. The biggest issue is a very good connection to minimize the lag from the hardware to the remote users software.

Textures/lighting etc. are the biggest places we are going to see improvements going forward and just being able to do more as far as function, beyond graphics.

i.e. compare the user made textures for skyrim to the default. The default textures look like a blurry mess by comparison.

i.e. heres an image from ARMA 2 on PC. to render this on the ps3 or xbox, the textures would have to be reduced to shit quality, high res textures require alot more video memory.

No it isn't its a T-90 in Arma 2. The foilage is a dead give away. its all about lighting, angle and time of day to get a really realistic screen cap, just like this one also from arma 2 and like I said, the foilage in arma 3 looks different/more realistic.

I explained it, I can easily make a screen grab that looks that good. Crank all the graphics up to super maximum, set the right time of day, use the camera view in the editor and get the right angle where the light is shimmering just so off the metal.
