Just out of curiosity, do(or should I say, did) you need a gas station attendant to use fuel additives?

Nope. You can buy them at any auto parts store and put it in yourself. The attendents can do it for you.

I worked at a 24 hour Checker in 1971 and pumped gas all hours a day. No such thing as self service. And we washed your windshield and checked your oil for free. Service....what a concept.

Gas was also 31 cents a gallon.

From what I gathered:

The initiative as-written basically says for small, rural places at night pumps can be self-service; it's not getting rid of the attendant. Otherwise, pumping your own gas in Oregon is illegal.

...yeah, I think it's fucking asinine too. Apparently there are 2 reasons, based on who you ask: Since it's being done "by a professional" (and I use that in the very loosest sense), the insurance rates are lower, and thus lower prices at the pump--although you wouldn't be able to tell since it's only slightly less than Washington's prices and California's prices. The second is that "it creates jobs". Now, while most attendants are nice to you and if they aren't slammed they'll offer to wash your windows (no checking oil and tire pressure like the old service stations), I don't think it should require a state-level prohibition to do so.

Since the US has become more 24-7 and people travel at all hours, apparently it's been a problem in small rural communities for small stations to be staffed 24/7, and I think there's been complaints from commercial drivers (not necessarily semis) that in those areas it's virtually impossible to find stations that are open. Hence the initiative, which to me makes a bit of sense. The whimpering simps who need their gas pumped for them (that don't have a disability that prevents them from doing so) get their gas pumped for them, but if you're traveling to the middle of nowhere and you run low on fuel at 3:00am you don't have to stop and wait for hours just for someone to open the station.

But of course, Oregonians have to Oregon. Keep in mind, this is the same state that dynamited the beached whale back in 1970.

Anybody remember the Mini-service stations in the 80's?
I don't know if other states had them, but they were in IL until the late 80's.
Mini-service was a middle between full and self service.
The worker pumped the gas for you, but did not wash windows or check oil.

Technically, everything in OR is classified "mini serve" They pump your gas, and if not busy most will offer to wash your windows, but are not obligated to.

I've seen some of those in WA as well, but OR it's pretty much a state mandate.

I have no problems if people want to stay in the car and have someone pump their own gas. Whatever. Most assbags out there don't know how to take care of their car anyway regardless of the state they reside in. But I do think from a logical standpoint, if you can fully automate a gas pump (most are automatic), and it costs too much to staff a gas station in the middle of nowhere in the middle of the night, why should someone have to camp in their car (a potentially dangerous situation) and wait until the station opens when they can just swipe their card, enter their zipcode, pump the gas themselves (and do just as fine of a job as a "paid professional") and be on their way?

That's all the initiative is saying, and it's scary funny how much Oregonians are making asses of themselves by it. All I can do is laugh.

I had no idea non-self-service gas stations existed outside of movies set in the early 20th century.

I've filled up a gas tank in Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Florida, and New Jersey.

In all instances it worked exactly the same.... same self-service.

If you wouldn't mind paying as much as 3.37 per gal reg unleaded in Chicago there are a few places that still pump gas for you.

You'd have to be really stupid or driving a car made over 30 years ago to have a chance of making that mistake. Diesel nozzles are wider and won't fit into an unleaded fuel tank's opening.

I've been to some gas stations in East Texas that aren't like this. It'd actually be pretty easy to make the mistake if you weren't paying attention.

I hope to god this comment is a joke.

"I've lived in this state all my life and I REFUSE to pump my own gas. I had to do it once in California while visiting my brother and almost died doing it. This a service only qualified people should perform. I will literally park at the pump and wait until someone pumps my gas. I can't even"

Vash is from Oregon?
