I bought a Ruger SR40C with the stainless slide. I can't wait to pick it up Thursday and shoot it. Like I said, this is my first pistol and I intend to keep it at my house, kinda as a 'nightstand' weapon, and maybe one day down the line get my conceal & carry license.

Does anyone have experience with a Ruger? Like? Dislike? Problems?

Here's a pic(not of mine but looks the same)...can't have mine til Thursday :shifty:

 Never fired one(that I know of, in case it's an existing design with ruger touches, ie: coil dampening) Looks like most compact strikers.

Enjoy and be smart with it.

Nice, can't go wrong with anything Ruger IMHO. The 10/22 was my first rifle and I've had a few of their pistols over the years.

Congrats.

Yeah, I'm sure they are all pretty simular, at least to a novice like myself. Supposedly the sr40 has a soft recoil compared to other .40's in it class, we'll see Thursday :D

Everything I've read on Ruger pistols echo what you are saying. I haven't heard or read many negatives about them. They seem to be reliable, and fairly accurate.

But damn, I can't believe the cost of ammo! Gonna need to take a loan out to practice with it lol

I didn't know that Ruger had gone to a "Glock" style trigger. Make sure you read up on the pistol. I've never had a Ruger but I know my Glock 27 has a 200 round break in period. It's expensive but make sure that you buy extra of the "good" ammo that you plan to load it with and shoot at least 30-50 rounds so you'll have an idea of what the pistol will do.

I'm not sure if Ruger is using the "Glock style" trigger on all their new pistols or if they just did it on the "SR" series.

Speaking of ammo, I am trying to get a clear understanding of the difference between "range" ammo, and "self defense" ammo.

As far as I understand, "range" ammo is considerably cheaper, and is a FMJ (full metal jacket) with a rounded bullet tip. Primarily used for the range because of cost, and because FMJ's don't expand upon impact.

"Self defense" ammo is normally JHP (jacketed hollow points), they cost much more and expand when they hit a target. The expansion of the bullet is important because it increases the "knock down" power, while being safer because it is less likely to travel through something and hit something you don't intend, correct?

I'm just trying to gain an understanding, all this is new to me.

I think he may mean striker fire rather than hammer fire when he says "glock style" trigger.

Range ammo is typically a lower grain (weight of the actual projectile) than HD ammo..The lower the grain the more recoil (excluding +p, ++p). It comes down to what's cheap to shoot, really. I have remington golden sabers for HD/competition and buy bulk for range time.

Oh, I thought when people say "glock style" trigger they were talking about the built in safety on the trigger, not sure though. You are probably correct.

I've been calling around for a couple days now trying to find range ammo so I'm able to shoot it tomorrow...the only thing I've been able to find is "reloads", and from what I've heard that's probably not what I should use.

This sucks.

Well, reloads aren't necessarily bad(pending the method). Homeloads are scary.

In my Infantry days, we would reload all kinds of goofy ammo. Anyone that has served in a light infantry unit should be able to tell you how much fun(and stupid/dangerous) it is to pack a blank full of powder, and shoot off a grappling hook.

So you'd be okay with shooting reloads in a pinch? They are reloads, not homeloads...I think the guy said they were $18 for a box of 50 rounds.

Any chance you have video of ya'll shooting that grappling hook? I'd love to see that shit! Awesome

In a pinch, no. Especially if the gun wasn't broken in.
If I knew the place(factor in that they have a lot of self-interest in not having their customer's blow up with their loads), and saw how they were loading(what kind of loader, ect), then yeah, I would be okay with it.

As for a video, no. We were humping so much gear, and this was before camera phones. IDK if someone has one up on youtube.

That's the best I can find. These guys are having some fun with it, despite not knowing how to use it. They're used for quite a few things, and I don't think we ever used them for breaching trip mines(maybe the manual suggested it, I have no idea, *edit* Ah yeah, that's some Vietnam shit). We built many rope bridges with these, which seems to be the bread-and-butter usage. Anyhow, they aren't anywhere near using it right LOL. Oh well.

$18 for reloads is about right these days, but I wouldn't go higher than that. I wouldn't pay more than $25/50rds of new ammo.

Unfortunately, you've just picked a horrible time to try to find pistol rounds. it's actually much better than it was 2-3 months ago. You can use gunbot to locate ammo on the interwebz, but shipping sucks.
