There are a lot of people that choose to do it this way. Door knob, bed post, etc. Gives them a way out if they want it before passing out, which does happen quickly. IIRC Robin Williams did it this way. Wrapped a towel around the device on his neck so it wouldn't leave marks/be as painful.

Putting yourself in a situation that you're hanging off the ground doesn't give many options.

You don't hear about the people that used the post, or door knob, and decided not to go through with it.
