I was at the gym this morning, and I always do pull-ups, push-ups and chin-ups as part of my routine, as well as cardio..Today I saw a guy doing some dips, and thought I would give em a try

I did the first one OK, but when I was in the lowered position for #2, as I started to raise up, I felt 3 pops in my left shoulder and almost shit my pants from pain.

I immediately stopped, showered and left...Now my trapezius muscle is sore to the touch, and is a little sore in general
Did I strain/tear something?..My rotator cuff seems to be ok as I can rotate the arm with no pain

You strained something. If you had an actual tear you would know it.

Whatever you did, it's inflamed if it's sore to the touch. Drink a bunch of water and take an anti-inflammatory painkiller like naproxen sodium (Aleve). If it's not better in a few days then you've probably torn something. Stop being such a beast in the gym; you're not 25 anymore pops.

Agree with mick on this one. Might be a couple of leg days in a row for you good buddy. Curious though - you've never done them before?

EDIT: I'd also take a golf ball, or if you have a baseball (really any ball, but I imagine you'd want something solid) and roll your the muscle with it against a wall. That might offer some relief in the long run (but may hurt like shit when you're doing it).

This is a common injury. You have to build your dips up a bit old man. Even though pushups and dips share a lot in common, dips rely on the bars that you use, and for some people, the bars are spaced awkwardly. Thus, putting more strain on your rear shoulders. Rarely do people tear anything by doing two dips. You likely popped your shoulder in and out on the extra stress, which was the popping that you felt. If you do sitting dips to build them up, then you can compensate for the bar spacing. Maybe your form was bad and you had your elbows out.

Ive done dips before, but not recently..I researched them, and I think I went too deep from the start...Most recommend that you start out shallow and increase with time.

It's feeling better already. I took some Ibuprofin. I'll lay off for a couple weeks...Thanks to all

I think I fucked it up...This morning while not very sore, when I move the arm around I feel like a clicking sensation in the shoulder...I'm gonna give it a week and then go see a Doc.

Whats up BearsBud! Sorry to hear about that. It sounds to me like a pull rather than a tear. I've been training for years and dips are awesome but it has strict form. It sounds like you went down past the point where your upper arm was parallel to the bar. Then it transfers from chest to shoulders that low. I have pulled mine once before doing weighted dips. I took two weeks off and then started up again...carefully. Get in the spa a lot and put ypur shoulder up to the jet and get a massage as well like the athletes do. Those pops might be with you for a while. Mine do when I do pullups and dips sometimes as well.

Pretty sure you strained it bad. If it was not puffy and inflammed or black and blue you might be in the clear. Avoid dips for a month and get plenty of spa action.

The soreness is pretty much gone now... However, It feels like the joint is loose and sometimes I feel like a clicking sound when I move the arm..It never did swell though

I'm seeing my doc in June for my regular check up..If it still does that, I will mention it to him..In the meantime, I'm going to rest it...Thanks for the help

Yea, sounds like you did pop your joint out, when something like occurs it loosens up all those things that keep that joint all nice and tight. I've suffered this issue with my left shoulder after a dislocation in college. It never re tightened to where it once had been. I have to be careful with it.

Anytime. Don't forget to kinda rehab it and rest it as well. Avoid dips and definitely bring it up to your doctor, even though a specialist would tell you right away what is wrong and therapy whereas a doc might give you drugs lol

Do they have a dip machine at your gym? The thing where under the dip bars there is a little platform attached to weights that counter balance you body weight? Thats the think I use to build up dips until I can do my whole body weight.

Usually there is a pullup bar on those things as well. Another good one to build up with if you can't do pullups w/o assistance.

Yes they do, and I was using that machine to do my pullups and chinups...Unfortunately, I dont use any offset weight for those exercises and thought.."what the heck, let me try some dips" and never added any offset weight

Get an MRI now, don't wait until June...you partially dislocated it and caused soft tissue damage to ligaments and perhaps tendons.

Meanwhile, if pain or soreness return use moist heat therapy.
