Apparently they had wounded the lion with a previous shot and stalked it for two hours. The lion attacked and the hunter saved his ass at the last second with a head shot. You can see the lion's head jerk back just a bit when the shot hits him.... instant death.

Personally I'd have been rooting for the lion.
