The last time he was sent down (prior to Opening Day) I thought he was on revocable waivers, so this time if he's claimed, he's gone, right? With his low-ish arb salary the Cubs probably don't care too much even though I'm sure they'd rather keep him around to see if they can fix him.

He did have to pass through optional waivers. I don't remember if he passes once that means he can optioned freely the entire year or not though.

Hmmm... I didn't recall him having to move through waivers before. However, when you're DFAd, you do have to go through the waiver process. I wouldn't be surprised if someone like SD would pick him up because he's cheap... and could possibly survive in that massive park.

I had to read up on it when it happened, but apparently if you have enough service time with options remaining you have to pass through what are called optional waivers. They are revocable, but it is seperate from other waivers. So I don't believe it comes into play with the how many times you can be placed on revocable waivers.

I think what you guys were speculating is the correct interpretation. The Cubs decided that they had seen enough of Randy Wells and were going to open his 40 man roster spot for Soler.

Oh, I know about the optional waiver rule. I just didn't recall whether or not Wells had to go through that. However, when you are DFAd, you have to go through the waiver process... or be traded within that time frame... before you can be reassigned.

I am pretty sure the Cubs will see if anyone wants to trade for him, which is doubtful, and then place him on waivers. The reason they are doing this as we both know is to create a 40 man roster spot.

The one thing I was wondering aloud was whether or not you have to pass through optional waivers more than once in a season or not.

It's very likely that someone will claim Wells and the Cubs will be out their $1.5MM or whatever minus prorated league minimum etc. etc. I'm sure they know this too and don't really give a shit because Wells went from potentially good back-of-rotation guy to fail.

I believe, and I could be wrong here, that you only have to go through the optional waivers at the time the option is burned.

ESPN's blurb says they have the 10 days to trade or waive Wells. I assume that if a team does claim Wells they can attempt to set up a trade within a certain period of time but I'm no longer sure they can pull him back.

I'm also not sure with Wells' attitude that he'd want another assignment to Iowa either.

Good point. Wells could refuse assignment and go FA.

The Cubs will skip Wells next start and the next time it comes around, Dempster will be activated. Then either Maine or Dolis will be optioned back to Iowa, unless a trade occurs.
