Is the main character the son now then?

No. It's a prequel, but John Marsten isn't the main character.

In the first Red Dead, the final thing John had to do before returning home was help the government hunt down the leader of his former gang, Dutch. Red Dead 2 takes place while the gang (which you're a member of) was still together.

What I like is that so far (I'm only 2 hours in), it's not just a gang. It's more of a small community trying to survive in the wild while on the run, there are women traveling and living with you too. It kind of reminds me of The Walking Dead, which is of course inspired by Westerns.

I’ve heard nothing but amazing things about it. Heard it’s about 50 hours long and that’s without doing any side quests. Can’t wait to start playing it

I played this game all day.

Couple things struck me.

First, if you absolutely know you are gon play this game, then don't read anything about it. Except for mechanics tips, avoid all press. This game is such a narrative experience, basically everything is a spoiler.

Second, I'm not sure this game is really going to be for everyone. Its not really an action game. More of a cowboy sim. Everything you do is methodical and slow as shit. The game world feel alive and I think you are meant to lose yourself in the landscape and the comings and goings of the inhabitants. The gameplay loops are very long. I think the whole package is pretty incredible, but is a pretty atypical gaming experience.

100% agree. I played all night and am only like 4.5% through completion.

LMAO imagine being a grown 30 year old nerd playing a game for nerds literally all hours of the night and not even being good enough to beatthe game, not even 5% of the game even after practicing all night LMAO

So there is a regular special edition and ultimate edition. Is it worth paying the extra for the ultimate edition?

I don't think the special edition is worth it at all. It might seem enticing because a mission comes with it, but once you start playing, you realize how there is almost endless shit to do. 1 mission is not gon be noticeable in the least.

still haven't played the first one since ps4 isn't backwards compatible (*** af).

Hoping they eventually release them for PC.

Meh, its $20... I saved more money by paying the extra $20 and not going out last night while playing RDR2 instead.
