We've all heard the shit you like..... so not surprising.
It isn't what someone listens to or prefers, it is about genuine music appreciation. Whether it is Prince, Greg Allman, Walter Becker, Glenn Frye or David Bowie, one doesn't need a fan to appreciate an artist's body of work. I never really listened to Bowie but there was no doubting the quality of what he produced or that he was an icon. In a community such as this, there are members who go to threads about musicians whom have passed to, in a way, mourn or appreciate what the artist left behind. Then you have people who, for whatever reason, find joy in shitting on other people's affection and appreciation for an artist. I can't explain it but it speaks volumes.
Regardless of whether or not one liked Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers there is no doubt that they left an indelible mark on rock & roll. If you've seen them live you know them as a very tight and talented band; to some one of the very best. Damn the Torpedoes, Wild Flowers, Into the Great Wide Open, Hard Promises, Full Moon Fever, Southern Accents were all great and the number of wonderful singles are too many to list. And whether or not you enjoyed his work, if one has anything more than myopic view of music, there is no denying the massive amount of great rock & roll he and his band produced. The likes of Roy Orbison, Bob Dylan, George Harrison, Steve Winsood, Stevie Nicks, Johnny Cash and others felt strongly enough of Petty to include him in their careers. There will always be trolls but I don't understand why some people post on threads just to be nasty. It would be just as simple to write, "Though I never truly appreciated his work, it is clear that his music was important to many of our board's members". Its unfortunate because it adds nothing of any value to the discussion or the board. These poster's additions to the board are actually subtractions to the boards over-all worth. And yet they remain.
