There are piles of this shit everywhere, rusting out our vehicles for no reason. Car washes love it, as we waste our $$ in vain attempts to remove.

Why do they do this when sand is a better option?.

Mag chloride is a better option than sand too. One more thing Colorado does better than Illinois

Salt screws up the roads and causes pot holes. Guaranteed work for the well-connected road companies.

I read an interesting article on the topic-

The American Highway Users Alliance this week released a study that concluded the impacts of using deicing salt on roadways far outweighed the costs, both in terms of safety and financial concerns. It was conducted during nearly 60 major snow events over seven years by the University of Waterloo in Ontario, Canada.
The study states that:
Road-surface condition is the single most important factor during a winter event, trumping visibility, precipitation intensity, air temperature, wind speed and exposure. • The use of road salt reduces collisions by as much as 85 percent.
A 10 percent improvement in the surface friction of a road yields about a 20 percent reduction in crashes.
Before-and-after analysis on four-lane roads showed a 93 percent reduction in accidents after deicing.
Deicing pays for itself within 25 minutes of being applied.

That stuff is far worse for cars than salt. plus, there is no long term knowledge of what it does to roads. Many feel it is worse than salt.

Car rust and corrosion are caused by acid created when a salt is dissolved by the moisture in the air. Rock salt remains a crystal until the humidity reaches 70 percent, which doesn’t happen much during the winter. But magnesium chloride dissolves when there is only about 20 to 30 percent humidity. “Which means that your vehicle, if magnesium chloride is sprayed on it, is wet constantly,” Baboian said. The acid stays on your car and slowly eats away at the paint and metal..Remember: Magnesium chloride above 20 degrees can form acid.

Current RH=73%...off to the car wash again.

I'm honestly surprised my 10 year old car hasn't fallen apart yet given I rarely wash it.

I like to complain about shitty plastic cars nowadays... but stuff like this makes me realize the pros and cons.

Show of hands for people who remember the dim, dark days of the 90's, where the roads were riddled with the leperous corpses of 70's and 80's vehicles that would crumble and rain rust at every bump!

For quite some time in my late teens and early 20s, I bought disposable cars, most with rusty panels, some with holes eaten in the floorboards. 78 monte carlo, 78 boneville, 70,73, 75 novas, an 81 caprice, a 76 blazer, and my personal favorite disposable car... 68 plymouth satellite. All in various states of decay.

Ford may be on to something with the aluminum F150. There will still be rust to the frame and suspension but at least the body won't rust away. The Ford HDs go aluminum next year and so do some of their cars. I know it's for mpg but the lack of body rust would be nice.

you hit the nail on the head though- when they died, that is where they went. 30 or 40 bucks and a free tow!

If the weight difference is substantial, I couldnt justify going to it. I tow some pretty heavy stuff that pushes lighter vehicles around on the highway.
I used to have a grand cherokee limited that I loved, over 20 mpg with a strong v8 that hauled the boat around town without issue, but it was horrible on the freeway... would get pushed all over at 70+.
For less heavy duty applications aluminum might be great though.

It depends on the model. My 2012 F150 Supercrew with the 5 ft bed and 4x4 would lose around 600 pounds. If you liked towing with a Jeep you would love the F150.
