Well a Canadian did decode it. So apparently they just assume everything is an officiating error.

This is a very interesting article. Many people don't realize that often gladiator contests didn't end in death. Gladiators were very costly to train and losing one in a fight would be a big hit to the bottom line. Also interestingly thumbs up meant a fighter was to be killed, while thumbs down meant a gladiator would be spared. One thing neglected by Hollywood which I must admit I didn't realize until reading this was the idea of a referee in the middle of the fight. Although with the Roman love of law and regulation it doesn't surprise me.
