Where are all the people who said that it is silly to sign free agents to a team that isn't ready to compete yet? I believe the supposed contract to Sanchez and this one to Jackson qualify as sizeable free agent contracts.
Garza cost the Cubs a prospect(s) and 5.9 million in 2011, 9.5 million in 2012, and this year? Some said the Cubs grossly overpaid for a marginally higher than .500 pitcher with a career 3.84 ERA that was no better than a #2.
Comparing pitchers, I'm sure they feel that paying a marginally better than .500 pitcher with a worse career ERA who is tabbed as a #3 (14 million) a year over 4 years is a great signing though.
