I run in hiking shoes cause its what I have. I think all this shoe "tech" is a bit overblown and a bit of nonsense.

Go get fitted for a good pair of running shoes by someone who knows what they are doing. Even the way you lace them can make a big difference. Good shoes make a HUGE difference.

Also agree w/ most of what ohiostate is saying. Running is tough on the body. Lots of other ways to build up cardio / drop weight that aren't rough on your joints and ligaments. Not saying that you shouldn't run, but I would be careful about getting stupid with the mileage (especially too quickly) and would probably be good to mix it up with some other stuff.

Yeah, I will probably just switch over to an elliptical.

I guess eventually I will switch to cycling but my bike got stolen and I fucking hate shopping for bikes.

With summer coming up, you should just swim laps for a couple months.

My daughter's pitching coach (fastpitch softball) wants her to run cross country as an off-season training regimen. She already jogs on a treadmill at home infrequently up to 1.5 miles at a fairly leisurely pace, and runs at school for off season training or they alternate crossfit. My daugther is 14, not the most aerobically fit, but a good athlete in her chosen sports. She will be an incoming freshman, two-a-day practices start in August. Can someone suggest a good resource for a training plan for a novice runner so she is not coughing up a lung come August?

If she does the run workouts on Crossfitendurance.com until August she will be a cross country phenom come the Fall. For a HS athlete, I would suggest cutting their distances in half. They use a lot of acronyms and whatnot, but if you take a look and have questions let me know. Distance running is a lot more than just logging miles at a certain pace. I am competitive in marathons and half-marathons (with a plan to do an ultra this July) and my program revolves around intervals all under a mile in length with the heaviest emphasis on 400m and 800m. I will only go over 10k in a training environment once of twice a season. All of that being said...Personally, I don't find CC to be the best training mechanism for softball. Softball is not a sport like soccer, basketball, lacrosse, etc where "endurance" conditioning plays a large factor. A softball player isn't going to be expected to run over 100m on a regular basis. I think a program like crossfitfootball.com (not to be a complete CrossFit homer) is a better fit for softball. If you are just looking to keep her reasonably fit though, CC is great. Coolrunning.com appears to be the site that couch to 5k comes from and, although I can't speak to that specific program like Brett can, some of the training plans on that site look pretty good. I would personally incorporate more speed-work than their beginner 5k program calls for, but in the interest of brevity I will stop typing now.
