So some of you know that I have been training for my first 5K. I got really disappointed about two weeks ago when I went from treadmill to indoor concrete track. I had issues not only with pace, but especially with shin splints. I tried a different pair of shoes and I it helped, but I still get the splints bad and have to stop way before the rest of my body wants to quit.

I was given a suggestion of New Balance or Saucony for fitting (I have wide feet so I am limited in choices). I was thinking of going to Dick's Pond to get fitted for the right running shoe.

So two questions:

1) Does my plan sound right?
2) Anyone know of other shoe stores that will actually fit you for the right shoe based on foot type, etc?

Thanks!

Try running with no shoes. Works for Indians and Samoans

This is actually great advice. do this first for a while, then try to find shoes that give you a similar experience (but protect your feet a little from glass/rocks/needles/etc)

God gave you all of the support you need if you are in good shape, shoes are just to help humans after we got kicked out of the Garden.

Are you sure they are splints?
How long have you been training?
Is the pain on the outside or inside of your shins?

So not true. I'm flat footed with absolutely 0 arch and have bunions like an 80 year old woman because of it. I try to avoid walking barefoot whenever possible and have special inserts for my shoes. Sucks....

Is the pain on the outside or inside of your shins?

I have been training for several montsh but only a two weeks off the treadmill.

The pain is front of shins and immediate sides of shins closer to foot than mid leg.

Another vote for this. I have had 2 pairs of vibram 5 fingers and they are awesome. I haven't gotten into jogging in them because jogging isn't my thing, at all, but they are incredibly comfortable. I had to switch to a pair with a little thicker sole for my last pair, the super-thin types magnify every pebble, twig, & surface imperfection you step on

That may not be splints. Should verify with a doctor. Many new runners have this issue for awhile when they start road running. It could be lactic acid in the low front outside muscles that pull your foot upward. This will go away over time as they get stronger. Splints are usually on the inside of the shin. At least this is my experience in many run related discussions in the military. But get a doctors opinion to be sure as I am only web certified. Lol

New Balance make good outdoor running shoes. I got well over a thousand miles out of my last pair. Stupidly bought Nikes this time. Will be going right back to NB.

As for the shin pain, no shoe will prevent that, it's happening because your legs are out of running shape and not used to the impact on concrete. You just have to run through it. It'll go away pretty quickly.

I'm a fan of New Balance and Asics. Haven't had as good luck with Nike. The cost of good running shoes is rediculous by the way.

I went through a bunch of different running shoes when I ran XC. Asics was the best brand in my experience. It was all about comfort for me. I know a lot of people go to places where they look at/measure your feet and pick the right shoe, but I was always pretty good at picking the right one for me.

But yeah... running on the treadmill indoors is nothing like running outdoors.

The only way I am going to be running is if a big dog is chasing me. I do walk a couple of miles a day and have found New Balance to be the best.
