I've worn nothing but Saucony since I got my first pair of them about 5 years ago. I also have wide feet and issues with bad joints, and they've worked wonders for me and allowed me to continue running, even into my low-mid 40s.

That may not be splints. Should verify with a doctor. Many new runners have this issue for awhile when they start road running. It could be lactic acid in the low front outside muscles that pull your foot upward. This will go away over time as they get stronger. Splints are usually on the inside of the shin. At least this is my experience in many run related discussions in the military. But get a doctors opinion to be sure as I am only web certified. Lol

This. I ran in Chuck Taylors because I didn't want to change shoes to do squats/dead lifts. Anyway, I had this same problem for about 1 month and thought it was shoe but it turned out to be tissue. I tried different shoes and had the same problem, eventually it went away as the stamina in my lower legs got better.

If you do buy new shoes, never buy this year's edition. Try them on at a store until you find the ones you want, then go online and buy the previous year, you'll save at least 20%. The differences between years are negligible unless it was a total redesign of the line.

Also, be wary of any store that recommends you buy some $150 "motion control" shoe. There has been a lot of research recently that indicates motion control shoes don't help prevent injuries at all, and may actually increase you chance of injury because of how they change your natural stride. Better to get some good insoles or orthotics and slap them in a plain old cushion shoe than run in some heavy stability clogs.

Got a pair of Brooks yesterday. Testing them out tomorrow morning but they felt good on the tread at the store

Did you know that when shoes start running it's likely some sort of devil magic that caused it‽‽‽ And since we're on the subject of the devil: he wasn't even partially responsible for Eve's original sin, that was your run of the mill talking snake (serious, read that shit)...

So I discovered a few more things today.

1) The Treadmill does not tax your lungs as much as a concrete track.
2) My Brooks Dyna Neutrals helped tremendously on my shin splints. I was able to do 2 miles in 25 minutes which made me very happy.

Pretty excited to see if I can do the 5K on Thursday afternoon. Even if I have to walk portions of it I'd be happy right now to just finish.

Did you go to the store I told you about?

I was about to when my wife said, the twins (her cousins who ran cross country for York) go to a place in Romeoville which is a lot closer. I got the name and hit up DNA Athletics. The guy there pointed out my flaws, treadmilled me up and I was out in about 30 minutes with new shoes. Then he went on about how dominant York High was in Track. It was nice to hear but honestly I am clueless about that stuff.

But thank you so much for the suggestion. I will definitely check them out when I am in the area.

Next store will be Naperville Running Store. I heard it routinely is ranked as the top 50 stores in all of America and run by an ex Olympian. Apparently North Central is one of those elite college running schools as well. I dunno.

My legs feel great right now though. Couldn't be happier.

DNA is a good place and they know what they are doing, similar to Dick Pond's.

York is good in Cross Country as Joe Newton is an amazing coach (former Asst mgr of Olympic Marathon team), and has gotten York to win like 28 of 50 state tiles including like a 10 year streak. I ran for Schaumburg (on of the few teams that have beaten them in state), but ran in his summer program a few times.

North Central is one of the elite running colleges in it's division.

I prefer the Asics Gel Kayano. It's a great fit and has a wide toe box. Throw a Spenco type insole in there and your feet will be in heaven.

York runners are also notorious for flaming out in college due to the insane amount of miles that they do in high school. Those 1,000 mile summers when you're 14-18 catch up to you sooner rather than later.

Yup, did those....our Schamburg coaches were not that far off.
