There is some premium cope being passed around in here. When has a team traded away a 5th round draft pick for another teams backup lineman to remain a backup on his new team??

He's obviously the plan at Center.

FYI: The 5th round is exactly where you look to find quality backups and draft steals. If your GM can't even find his own depth pieces he sucks at his job.

This only makes sense if Bates is the starter, and if he is a good starter at center the trade is fine.

My main issue is the fifth.

Feel like this is someone the bills were trying to get rid of, but the bears had no 6th pick cause they wasted it on mullet man.

It sucks losing draft capital... but if he ends up being the starter AND performs much better than last year's disaster, then the 5th was well worth it.

Plus... the Bills had too much guaranteed money tied up in their old center and had to make a decision.

Watching the video of his 35 snaps this past year I noticed he is able to switch off his block and pick up the stunt/cross blitz and block the other team, not a teammate It's already a win.

Sounds like its a cap move or Bates wanted to start.

They did kind of sign him to a deal and then parked him on the bench for whatever reason
They matched Poles offer to keep him even though they didn't really need him. They liked him that much. Now Poles saves some money but loses a 5th and Bills save some needed $ and get a roster spot they need for another position.

Having mulled this over in my mind - if Bears were looking to draft a C on day 2 but didnt want to rely on the pick being a starting C while he goes through rookie growing pains - Bates would be a really good placeholder who could kick over to OG when Jenkins goes downs and give the rook a few games to cut their teeth.
This or day 3, if the right guy falls and I suspect we'll need to accumulate more picks for that to happen this year.

He wasn’t below average in 2021 or 2022. He was above average. 2023 he didn’t play but 35 snaps. Buffalo had a ridiculously healthy OL on the interior this year. Again not sure how this plays out but to say he was below average in his time in Buffalo is just being a meatball.
Buffalo likely looked at his play time vs salary and called Poles or Poles badgered them. 'If we get to FA...'

I believe this is the plan while finding a young guy to groom... which may not happen until next year. Unless very special rookie, you'd much prefer a vet at C.

I liked remy's idea where having Bates allows you to go after a Connor Williams in FA now as you would have someone you could use to start the season.

Seems like a solid pick-up, and we certainly could use help on the o-line. Is he worth a fifth? I suppose that depends in part on how well a team drafts in the middle rounds, and the Bears record has been spotty at best.

It seems like a pretty good trade for Chicago.

Works well. Connor may also become a relative bargain get under the circumstances and Bates becomes a G to maybe start later this year and probably next.

It's not so much the pick as giving up the puck to pay a backup OL $5 million a year?

Unless he's starting at center, this makes little sense.
As mentioned earlier, they're not paying him $5M per year; they're paying him $3.4M. That's the going rate for a backup IOL, especially one with starting potential. The Bears have to replace three players on the inside: Whitehair, Patrick, and Mustipher. This move tells me that they don't trust the health of Jenkins and Davis and it's far better to have Bates than a 5th round draft pick backing them up.

This is also to recruit saquan barkley to the bears.

I heard this from the voices in my head!
Is there a newsletter that I can sign up for?

Nope. He only costs 3.9m the next 2 years as Buff eats the SB.

I wonder if this signals we go after Connor Williams as Bates can start if Williams needs more time to recover.

Think he fills the Cody Whitehair role. Versatile inside guy that can play any position

I hope the plan is to draft a C and Bates is the starter for 1 year, while the rookie backs up C/G. Although, the Bears are getting light on draft picks.

C.Williams is a great C but also has a pretty bad injury history for how young he is so i guess Bates would now become the backup for our entire IOL.

From the sounds of it C.Williams will not come on a bargain price. Sounds like he's going to get around $13-$14 mil per but of course this is just from sites that are doing their own personal projections.

Please show your work that it's the going rate for a backup IOL.
