This just feels like more Ryan Poles continuing to try and go go too heavy on value along the line instead of truly beefing it up with talent. It's hard to believe that Poles has rolled out players like Schofield, Mustipher, Reif, Patrick, Davis, Feeney, etc. And expected good results. This feels like another journey down that route.

I am not sure I agree we skimpped on the line. We gave Davis 10m a year. Also drafted Wright, Jones, Kramer, Thomas, Cartera over the last 2 years and signed Reiff, Patrick, traded for Feeney and tried to sign Bates. I think the bigger issue is guys like Patrick and Davis have failed rather than we skimppes as we have dumped a lot of resources into OL.

We paid Whitehair and average of $10mil/yr.
Sometimes skimping isn't about what you spend, it's about the talent you attempt to acquire.

We flop with J'Taco, oh well, he's good enough. We flop with Massie and Leno, wait until their contracts are up in a light OT year, oh well, better throw a lot of money at the crap we got.

The Bears are almost always skimping on oline. It's not about them spending X on defense and Y on offense.

Quantity is not the same as quality. Wright and Davis were the only significant investments in the OL. Signing backups to be starters is not…

The issue here is the Bears likely thought they were acquiring quality. They just ended up being wrong.

Dont think they were like Patrick sucks lets sign him. Think in both cases they identified guys they thought were quality lineman who happened to not have been full time starters.

Every year in the NFL some former backups get signed and excel as starters. And some dont. Such is life.

I don't worry about Davis missing games... I worry about him playing games.
He was above average at Tennessee. He’ll be more motivated to play better this year because he knows if he doesn’t, he’s gone. And his next contract will then be a vet minimum deal.

Bears acquire G/C Ryan Bates from Bills for 2024 5th-round pick
The Bears recently tried to acquire Ryan Bates in free agency, but the Bills beat them to the punch. Chicago finally got its man, acquiring Bates from Buffalo for a fifth-round pick.

This isn’t a bad trade for Chicago, but it’s a rather curious one. Bates is a solid depth player who can start at multiple positions on the offensive line. However, the Bears could have obtained someone comparable to him in free agency without surrendering any sort of draft compensation. It may have cost them more money, but they’ve got plenty of cap space.

Given the unnecessary use of resources, I can’t grade the Bears favorably. I like that they strengthened their blocking for Caleb Williams (presumably), but the Bills won this trade because they got a free draft pick out of it.

Grade for Bears – C
Grade for Bills – A-

Considering the Bills are on the hook for the guaranteed money... it wasn't a free draft pick. They paid a few million dollars for that draft pick. (but still saved $1.4mil) Bears on the hook for $4mil per year. This year and next.

I mean we are paying Davis big money. Pretty brutal if he doesn't pan out.

And if Poles is actually a gifted OL evaluator, he should be able to make chicken salad out of chicken shit for a few spots on the line.

Hoping for that needle in a haystack is not what many would call "investing" in the position.

Fine if they're able to get a capable C in the draft and not put all of Poles' eggs in the Bates basket.

Brad Biggs in his article today sure makes it sound like Bates is your new starting center

Did he have any barber sources or is he relying on his alleged insiders?

Whether it would work out or not if that's Poles' plan and all he is willing to invest in protecting and hiking to Fields or the #1 pick he needs fired.
