The movie is based in the Vietnam era but it's a pretty decent retelling of Conrad's "Heart of Darkness." Which was equally bizarre and set in Africa.
The horror, the horror.
Oh wow, now I know it's a loopy Friday when I am seeing talk about Conrad novels and even Kurtz's famous last words in NHTA on top of Ben Smith getting the RW call-up! But well done though so kudos and all for throwing in a little literary shoutout, lol.
It is Bizarro Friday, I like that it is the name of the documentary associated with the film, and if you've seen it, you know how truly appropriate it is. Especially Sheen's wacked out ass. I the behind the scenes part with him in the room and breaking the mirror. Awesome.
That part was bizarre. But the scene that really lost me. was the playmate scene, Where the guys are fondling the girls and the girls are just paying them no mind but one of them is freaking out about something.
I'm certainly not from that generation but the entire movie seemed to not be remotely in touch with reality. I mean sure fictional stuff is not reality but I just didn't find the movie believable.
In my opinion the most fucked up part is when they happen upon some fucking french aristocrats living in a goddamn mansion in the middle of the jungle. and charlie dont surf.
Ties the whole French in Vietnam thing together but yea was a little odd.
Indeed the documentary is fantastic! As just a documentary film it stands on it's own as just great filmmaking but in addition IMO it's the best film about the making of a film I've ever seen. All made possible by the incredible amount of behind-the-scenes footage that Coppola's wife Eleanor shot during filming at the time thinking she was going to make a documentary herself.
No, it's the opening line from Apocalypse Now. I had a few drinks tonight so I feel rather silly.
"There's nothing like the smell of fresh NAPALM in the morning"!!!
That movie is a CLASSIC.
TJD----The French were in Vietnam fucking with them LONG LONG before the US became involved. It was the primary reason we were there to begin with.
The extended version (redux) is worth the watch. All of the deleted scenes serve a purpose, and there's one scene in which they visit a French family and stay for a bit. I thought it was a very good scene, and a shame it was omitted from the theatrical release. Also, there's a scene in which Robert Duvall's character loses his surf board and uses his forces to search for it.
have seen it several times. One of my all time favorite movies.
Remember the Helicopter searching for them blaring calls for the board while they are roaring up the river ... HAHAHAHA!
That showed just how fucked up things were there military wise.
The extended version with the french also has him sleeping with his wife! Or daughter I could never figure out which.
My favorite part is when Coppala smacks his head on the way out of the helicopter. Slapstick at it's finest.
I like the original version better than Redux. It's long enough as it is - just about the perfect length for an epic. You can understand why the extra 41 minutes didn't make it in the original film, for the most part they are not essential - although there was one extra scene that I thought was good, but I forget what it is right now.
Apocalypse Now ranks in my top ten movies of all time. Had it on Video, then DVD. Don't know if I will get the Blue Ray version too though.
