Given the situation, For the cap hit what else could we have done? I've never seen Richards, and Toivenen should never wear the indianhead outside of Preseason games. Carruth/Simpson are in a worse position than Salak, and Huet's not an option.

Could we have signed a vet proven backup for 600k? Probably not.

I do think that there might be a chance that we go after another netminder to push Salak, but even assuming Salak makes 15 starts and loses all but 5, I don't think we're in that bad of position unless the D shits the bed worse than it did last year, and something tells me Cullimore and Boynton will not be tagnuts on our back end this coming year.

Am I the only one who thinks that Waite and Flaherty are going to be huge assets for Salak?

No, I think they have proved that they know what they are doing with the success of Niemi last year. Salak also had the privilege to work with goaliecoach Urpo Ylönen while he was in Finland, who has been behind Kiprusoff and Niittymäki, so he has had solid coaching in his young career.

I would like to see the Hawks grab Greiss from the Sharks. He's a UFA. Would help with our goalie depth problem, and also give Salak some competition for the backup job...

100% agree. I would be very comfortable with something like that. Greiss is very capable, very good #2 or #3 option.

To be honest, I'll be pissed off if the Hawks don't make some kind of play for him. I think someone is going to sign him, and I think that someone isn't going to be San Jose. He is exactly what the Hawks need, and if he's not looking for too much, there's no reason not to sign him for depth.

I just read where Jesse Rodgers said it was a reported 3 days ago it was a one-way, but I thought I read here it was a two way deal. It's two-way correct?

It's a one-way deal, as it makes sense to lure him over, I doubt he would have accepted a two-way deal.

Well that's what I thought too, but I read two-way somewhere. Looks like he's going to be our backup. No way the hawks pay two goalies to not play in the NHL.

Honestly, I could care less about them still paying for Huet. That is business and when you look at the revenues being produced still from them winning the Cup, I feel no shame knowing they are kicking out $5M to Cristobal (BTW, is this the last year?)

As far as Salak, let's hope he is qualified and plays the backup role as it appears to be heading right now. In a worst case scenario at $600K if he spends some time in Rockford it is not going to be a huge impact. The question would be what they would have to pay for someone to fill his role in Chicago.

Everything I have read makes it sound like Salak was a steal for us.

Official cap hit is 612,500 according to Stuy.

Every penny is going to count.

I would have prefered to keep Salak over in Finland if he does actually have a 1 way contract. Crawford is going to eat up a bulk of the starts this upcoming season, and while Salak and his salary are nice, I don't want the Hawks to get away from developing prospects instead of using them as fillers because of low salaries. If Salak can get 30+ starts, then I guess it wouldn't be so bad, but I'd rather him not sit all season and play 10-15 games.

Nah, I'd rather him be here working with Waite and at his salary we need a backup there. He'll get some games, but he'll get a lot of experience in knowing what will be expected of him. Nothing left for him over there.
