I envy the choices you guys have for "cable" television. The condo I'm moving into makes it pretty cumbersome to get a dish (which I would prefer - although as far as the debate goes, I've been to houses with both DirecTv and Dish and have not noticed any major differences) and U-Verse isn't available in this area.. so I may be stuck with Comcast for the time being.

Anyone know if you HAVE to get the HD feed these days to get a DVR? I didn't see it listed as an option on Comcast's website.

I'm in the same boat with the condo's I"m moving into and I made it very clear to my lady doing it that this is a big deal to me and I'd prefer to do dish myself. In my area they all have sat/cable included in the assessments so it's included with the rent which sucks. I'm hoping the place i find will let me do dish and I'll build the stand alone mounting setup so it doesn't have to be attached to anything which is the big deal people have, they don't want damage to their condo, or the condo says they can't have one because it looks different than the other ones then. I think I saw one dish on one of the patio's so I may be good because it looked like they build the same thing I'm going to hopefully do.

As for the HD feeds question... I have no idea with comcast, Dish you don't have to but they strongly prefer it, I don't see why you would have to especially with the price that comcast charges for HD. Have you looked at other cable or are you locked into comcast?

I just don't want to take the time to build this for a dish... I think that's one way I could get around it, I'm just too lazy to hook that up.

The only other cable company I know of that might come to the area is WOW and I haven't heard super great things about it.

The inlaws used to have WOW and didn't say horrible things, they looked just like comcast to me honestly. So having said that, how horrible can they be without being comcast?

It's a moot point anyway... apparently they won't go to Bloomingdale.

Huge difference. Dish doesn't have Center Ice. Direct TV does. Last time I checked anyway. Dish carries no sports packages not even baseball. Football of course is exclusive to Direct.

I have Dish and get CI

I had Direct TV from 2000-2004.

Pet Peaves;

-Keeping the trees trimmed for a clear LOS to the Southern Sky. My yard has lots of trees.

-seemed more sensitive to weather disturbances, particularly compared to the digital cable I have now. If the cable goes out the electricity is probably going with it so its a moot point.

-wasn't able to get local programming at that time, this is no longer an issue though.

-had to buy the intial equipment which was a $200 investment and installation was a bit of a chore or you payed someone to do it, but I think this issue has changed as well.

Regardless I switched to digital cable, which I bundle with phone and internet. Don't think I'll ever consider satellite again.

I think we're dropping the phone service we have and bundling everything with Comcast, which means we get faster internet for me to watch Hawks games on.

The smarter thing to do would be to drop the phone service all together, who needs landlines... what is this the 90s?

That's what we're doing, no more landline + cable and internet through Comcast.
