I get what you are saying, but if you put that era of Pontiac up against the big three Japanese producers the Japanese would win hands down.

Specifically Toyota and Honda from that era were just better vehicles.

Look at how much it is to buy a 90's Toyota Land Cruiser or Supra today with 200k and I think you will get my point.

Also, random car side note, I really think that pretty much every car company is doing a far superior job to what they were producing in the 90's. I am sure that there are certain random exceptions, but all in all it seems that pretty much every major car company has stepped up their game.

Anyone else feel that way?
You’re probs right. I’ve never paid enough attention tbh. I’m a GM whore pretty much. My dad sold them for 30 years (my entire childhood) so that’s what I drove and still do today. ??‍♂️

It all depends on what you get... those gm 3800 v-6 motors from that era were eternal.
We had one in a grand prix that made almost 400k miles before we sold it. Thing is probably still going.

I think the acura/ Honda 1.6 was the same way... beat em and mistreat em, they just kept running.

Most car companies have 1 or 2 motors that are solid and long lasting like that.

As for cars getting better nowadays...for sure.

From 73 and the advent of the catalytic converter, all cars were weak ass pieces of shit off the line.
The horsepower drop was shocking.
It literally took until the mid 2000s to make up the ground engines lost power wise.
It took almost 30 years for many stock v8s to get back up to 300 horses.

Now, v-6 motors are churning that out no sweat.

My V10 has 266000 and still runs great. My mechanic friends say they have seen them go double that.

I bet the trim and electronics in that car were absolutely shredded by that point.

Believe it or not- no.
My lady drove it and took care of it- she was doing 130 miles round trip to and from work... it added up fast.
It looked and even smelled new.

The nail in the coffin for that car was the heater core. I have pics of the repair somewhere and if I ever run across them I will post them.

Looked up the part on Summit, less than 50 bucks. It was getting to be winter, it had to be done.
Stopped at a dealership and asked what it would run. The dude looked up the bill for an impala that was just done- the exact same process and set up.
1800 bucks.

I scoffed and said I would do it myself.
a full day of work later, I absolutely understood the price.
Pull the steering wheel, drop the column, take off the trim, vents, dash, support frame for all of them, take out the passenger airbag, the frame behind the airbag.... to undo 2 clamps and slap the new one in.

Put it back together and immediately listed it on craigslist. got 1800 for it.
