Okay so we are at a consensus that most teams have a worse catcher situation than us but still have back up catchers?

No.

Wilson plays the vast majority of games this year.

68 out of 76

So he has had 8 days off all year. There has been 12 weeks this season. So that means his off day for the most part has been 1 per week if that.

Now if you want to match that up against other catchers feel free. I'm just on lunch and really don't have the time.

Now getting to the back up.

The Cubs have burnt through 3. On #4.

It is not by over use. Willson plays almost every game.

So it has to be by under use.

If it was 1 guy injured then it is no big deal. When it becomes 3 then you have to look at why.

The only why going on is non use. Tossed in sporadically.

So what do you do? Bench Wilson more? Burn through 10 back up catchers per year?

Option #3 might make sense.

But if you don't like that then draft SS and catchers only. They can be moved off position but that is added depth in 2 vital positions if needed.

So we have guys getting hurt from being underused. Undoubtedly there are other teams only playing backups once a week. Are they running through backups like the cubs?

Kris Bryant has an OPS + of 144 and most on here wanna give him 30 mil for 8 years

Kyle Schwarber has an OPS + of 151 and most on here didn’t want him on the team anymore and still wouldn’t at 8 mil a year.

Perez from KC has 75 games in. 2021 Games by Position: C (59). So he is getting some DH time.

Velaquez. 2021 Games by Position: C (65) 1B (1) 2B (1) 3B (1)

His back up DL. Got a AAA back up now.

Sean Murphy 2021 Games by Position: C (60)
Back up 24 games in.

Will Smith. 2021 Games by Position: C (52) 3B (1)

Caratini
2021 Games by Position: C (56) 1B (1)

Nola DL
Rivas 10 games in.

We can go on. But Wilson 2021 Games by Position: C (64) leads the pack. His off day has been a regular off day like the full time starters.

But ya burn out is a larger concern with Wilson. Cubsxlack the DH to lessen his work load while keeping his bat active. Perez has that luxury going on.

Wilson kicks ass but you get the risk involved here.

What I think is he was not given the opertunity to develop into one.

He was known for soft hands and a big arm as a catcher. The Cubs just saw his bat as MLB ready. The rest would be a project. They choose to rush him up. There is not much else to say about it.

2017:he struggled. Got sent back down and was a yo-yo

They did the same thing with Happ. Rushed him up then kicked him back. Now a struggling player.

When you make the same mistake over and over it is called insanity.

Now I am not saying that he would have been a all star quality catcher. But we never got to know what he could have been as one.

What we do know is as a LF he became expendable.
I will say, once you latch onto an idea factual or not you don’t let go

He is 1.8 fWAR atm. #43 ranked hitter in baseball. Trea Turner is ranked #10 at 3.0 fWAR. If it aint broke.

Do we have a better overall LF than Schwarber? I would have stayed pat keeping Schwarber, Darvish and Caratini, and going all in for the playoffs while we have the big guys still on board.

Schwarber now has 16 home runs in his last 18 games. The only other two other guys to do that….Barry Bonds in 2001 and Sammy Sosa in 1998
