The Cubs should trade Samardzija to the Bears.

I'd be fine with Shark starting as long as Cashner is too.

If we get Epstein though, that won't happen.

It takes some guys a while to figure it out. Take Randy Johnson for example, he was 29 before he had an ERA (as an every day player) of under 3.5. In his 30s he found his game and was dominant. This is the Randy Johnson that everyone remembers. Shark has a big arm and is is even relatively cheap given his upside. Why does cost matter? Cost matters because the lesson Epstein learned probably has more to do with overpaying for bad pitching than it does with simply having bad pitching. And we all know the Cubs arent in the same place the Red Sox are. Shark probably has more upside than anyone we can get in FA.

I actually wouldnt mind having Cashner and Shark as a 4 and a 5. Both of these guys could end up giving us ace stuff. They could also end up not working out. But where Shark is concerned, we're running out of contract with him. We need to see what we have and hope that his 2.97 ERA means that he's found his game.

I'm fine w/ it. Give the kid a chance. He's earned the right to lose a starting a spot, imo.

I wouldnt mind re-signing Garza, depending on how much he costs. I think that would constitute our starting pitching in a way that has a balance of steady, upside, and waiting for contracts to expire.

1. Zambrano (waiting for contract to expire unless we can move him)
2. Dempster (wating for contract to expire unless we can move him)
3. Garza (steady)
4. Cashner (upside and cheap)
5. Samardzija (upside and relatively cheap)

I just don't see a lot of great options in free agency. Its such that it's probably worth it to give ourselves a chance to hit the jackpot on Cashner, Samardzija, or both. If either Samardzija or Cashner perform up to their arms, then it's worth it, since they both have big potential.

Garza will be arb-eligible this off-season...shouldn't cost us more than $7M or $8M i'd think. Though I'm not great at predicting those.

Don't forget about Wells, either.

Wells first time Arb this year. Cubs still have control for 3 more years

Honestly i would give Shark a chance. 2012 not going to be year where Cubs compete. So i give Shark and Cashner every chance to show that they are future starting pitchers. If Cubs can get lucky and just have 1 of them stick in rotation then they can fill other 3 spots in FA or other specs that get brought up. As of right now my SP rotation would be

Garza
Demp
Wells
Cashner
Shark

Z will not be on the Cubs, Demp i can only PRAY that he opts out. Only other guy i go after in FA is Edwin Jackson cause he only 27

I've not heard anything on the Demp front...but it might make sense for him to opt out. He's clearly on the down-slope of his career, but there's not a whole lotta good pitchers on the market this year.
