TSN's Gord Miller reports San Jose has signed Niklas Hjalmarsson to a four-year, $14M offer sheet.

Hawks have seven days to match.

Anyone know what compensation we'd get in return?

Well damn, losing Buff to the Trashers hurt now Hjalmarsson?
I think Buff called & said he was lonely so they take Niklas to accompany him. :smh:

Part of the reason the Hawks front office cleared as much cap space as they did was to retain Niklas Hjalmarsson and Antti Niemi. As of right now we are 3.5 million under the cap without Huet's contract buried in Rockford and Stan Bowman has already stated that something will be done with Cristobal Huet. Also keep in mind we have 4.2 million in cap penalties this season, from Toews and Kane's bonuses, that come off the books next year.

I fully expected an offer sheet to be on the table for one of the better young defensemen in the NHL and I am sure the Blackhawks front office expected the same. I thought coming off his performance late in the season and in the post season Hjalmarsson would command 3-4 million and I hope Bowman has plans to match the offer sheet for a guy he personally has called a young Nick Lidstrom.

Everyone should calm down and wait to see what the Hawks front office does before we discount Hjalmarsson off the team.

Anyone have a good site for the cap? If teams can go over by a certain percentage (I've heard it was 10% and ClydeLee has 20%). I don't know that losing anyone is going to be necessary -even at the 3.5 mil that Wilson has chucked out there.

It would then become -- is this 10 or 20% over the cap (which doesn't count the bonus's coming off it). If the team is 3.5 mil under - but they can exceed it in the offseason by 10% - that would be something like another 6 mil to play with -and at 20% - something like 12 million to play with over and above the 3.5 that is posted in here.

The key here is getting under the cap when the season starts -- and of course - Huet is going somewhere ... there's that money... and then Stan starts the Rockford shuttle ...

It might be all right.

However that being said - I think I would retain #4 no matter what.

I dont think it is that bad a deal. They had to be thinking at the very least 3mil, so you give away the extra 1/2 mill but the trade off is he's hooked for 4 years at that price. If he plays up to his skill level, a couple of years from now it will be like they stole him. I wouldve thought some GM wouldve gone higher, given the Hawks cap condition...they should be able to fit this in, so match it.

I think they saw this coming and can still sign that and keep Neimi. I'm banking on Neimi loosing arbitration though which sadly doesn't even at the very earliest happen until July 20th so it's decision time for sure.

This still makes me sad that Chris Duhon a backup PG got this same contract offer in the NBA. Dumb NBA.

I agree totally they had to be looking at 3mil per so its 3.5 per match it and keep h4 around for a long time.

Between Niemi and Hjalmarsson .... I have to go with Hammer.
Agree 100%
Bowman's love Hammer. Adios Antti.
Yep

Yes, thats what i think too. Go over the cap to resign Hammer, fill out roster, and get a goalie (whether that be resigning Niemi or not), then when Huet goes to rockford, we will be ok

In retrospect, I was thinking that - does that 3.5 mil under the cap include Huet's contract or not? On one site I know that I didn't see Huet on there -although that was before the Ladd trade --so basically... I am confused. :p Go Figure :D

Yes, we are 3.5 million under the cap right now including a 5.6 million dollar hit from Huet's contract. That number also includes the 4.1 million dollar hit from Kane and Toews bonuses.

Appreciate that Livewire - then there shouldn't be any reason not to match it because of the cap - not even wanting to see what/if Niemi gets a similar offer.

It should strictly be about talent evaluation by the front office. As they got the money to sign and also enough wiggle room to go over. The wiggle room being nearly as much as Huet's contract -maybe a little more. So it can be done.
