Did you really just compare Sharps stats to Bickells? I think that might literally be apples to oranges...

At the risk of sounding like a total idiot, I'll ask you to elaborate on this, because I don't think it's as apples/oranges as you do.

I said this:

Sharp had 15 more points in 12 fewer games than Bickell in the regular season. He's got 12 points to Bickell's 5 (and Bickell is still without a goal) in the postseason. Sharp hasn't been his old self, but 12 points in the postseason? I'll take that from a third-liner all day.

Which prompted Novak's response in the OP.

Why shouldn't I be comparing the stats of those two? I get that Sharp is a former All-Star player, but he's very much on the downside of his career and Sharp's been on the third line for pretty much this entire postseason. Bickell's had a bunch of second-line minutes and Sharp is STILL outperforming him.

I think you can compare both.... compare the fact that both should be playing in a different city next year

Well looks like this thread is over.

The hawks know (or thought they knew) what sharp is -- a scorer. And they paid him as such. At ~6mill a year (if i'm not mistaken) they expect him to produce like a top 6 forward. Simply put, he hasn't. It's not even like he's just "cold" or anything either, he's taken veeeeeery few good shots and gotten very few good chances. For the most part, he's been invisible imo.

Bickell, on the other hand, was signed for his ability to be the "tough guy" (and of course, his ability to transform into an allstar in the playoffs). He's payed less (~4mill a year?) and was never expected to be a top 6 forward. Ever. Now has he produced like he should? Probably not, but he's never been asked, nor should he be asked, to put up the numbers sharp is capable of putting up.

This convo is moot though, as both will be gone next season.

For a third liner, sure... those numbers are fine.

For a guy paid almost $6M... to be a top player... surpassed by players that aren't even 25 yet... well....

I don't want to compare Sharp and Bickell, I just want them to move on from these two and get some new bodies with potential in the line-up.

Did we really expect him to still be scoring 30+ goals a season at the age of 33? Seems like a tough sell to me. He signed a 5-year deal and for the first three of them, he was absolutely worth it. Took a step back this year, obviously.

Bickell was given a pretty good raise with the hopes that he'd grow into a player worthy of a $4 million AAV, and he hasn't done that at all, despite getting a ton of opportunities to produce.

I'm more disappointed in a guy who got a raise and didn't live up to it than a guy who just got old after already honoring 60 percent of his contract with hockey worthy of his salary.

But, yeah, both are gone after this year anyway.

Huh?

Sharp had an injury plagued season the year after they resigned him yet still produced in the 28 reg season games he did play and had a huge playoffs that year. Last season he had 78 points. They got their money worth and then some after they resigned him. A guy who has been on the club 2nd longest and who was the Hawks leading point man and goal scorer at times. I like you novak but i dont know what you are smoking on this one. Hes had an off reg season this year by his standards but playing on the third line for much of it i dont know how anyone can complain about a 43 point third liner. And he delt with a lot of media bullshit for half the season.

I'm not really too disappointed with Sharp. Bickell has definitely been disappointing, especially in the playoffs.

It's not about "living up to the contract" as much as it is about money and who is coming up in our system.

I think both will probably bounce back and have a couple great seasons left in them... but with all the young talent coming up, the salary cap crunch that is inevitably happening, there's no doubt that these two are the most expendable.
