Shootout, OT or tie?

Would you change the Shootout format?

I know we had this discussion on here last year, and despite how exciting the shootouts are, I'd still rather see overtime or else the game end in a tie instead of a shootout?

I also added an option for people (I don't know if there are any) that would be interested in adding a Shootout element in the playoffs.

Regular Season Preference:
Overtime

Tie

Though shootouts keep the game a reasonable length.

Playoffs:
Overtime, no other options

Because of the length and not wanting ties, I chose the current system despite my hatred of shootouts.

I have no problem with the current format. Could it possibly benefit the NHL though by having OT until a winner is announced in the regular season? Yes. If a game were to go into 3 OT in the Reg season, you better believe news outlets would pick up that game or keep the audience updated, just like they do with MLB games that go 12+ innings.

10 min OT. Skills competition shouldn't be a way to decide a game.

Keep that shit in All Star games or whatever.

What news outlets would do that? Espn does that... Because they have the market and TV contracts to do that.

NHL only had nbcsports and the swap into an ongoing game isn't happening unless they change their format to be less esoteric. Since after their NHL games it's back to hunting/fishing.

Not sure how anyone likes the current format.

Majority of the time both teams are playing for a shootout. (unless either one has a PP)

It's not that we like it, it's that ties are even worse (trust me, I watch a lot of soccer, and they suck) and too many long OT's would suck over a long season.

Wouldn't mind 10 minutes and then shootouts but that wasn't an option.

the current format is fine.... I just wish Crawford was better handling goal in shootout formats

Playoffs are fine.

Regular season, One OT session and then a tie. If you lose in overtime, you lose the point, other team gets two. Otherwise, both get a point each.
I love the 4 on 4 format for OT, so let's keep that.

Just don't like the shootout as a way to decide the outcome of a game.

Ditto. The Shoot Out has become boring and worse than that...its cheapened the thrill of the Penalty Shot. Was great for a season or two but more and more it reminds me of the NBA's Dunk Competition, which is three steps past boring at this point. SO is not a way to properly decide a game....besides, ties never really bothered me.

Someone also mentioned Crawford having problems in the SO. Very strange as he was one of the best in the league last year in the SOs. He was also a poor overall goalie last year. Excepting the Shoot Outs, he's been outstanding so far this year....so I'll take that trade off.

Really dislike the SO. I have always been fine with ties.

I'd freak out big time if the playoffs switched....like to the point that I'd say to hell with the sport.

With the current format there needs to be a larger significance assigned to regulation wins - ea 3 points.

This. There should be three points available in each game. That would be far to easy of a solution for the league to implement tho....

Ties in regular season.

Unlimited OT in playoffs.
