If the president runs the show, approves the deals, then why have a GM ? It's more than semantics. To me it seems to be bloaty.

He can..The idea is 2 brains is better then 1. Hoyer was Epstein Assistant GM and basically is now. Cubs building an all star front office.

They're running it both as a business and as a baseball team...it's basically a delegation of duties, one of them is probably better than the other at various tasks. Put them together, and you have the Voltron of all front offices.

I think you guys are giving him too hard of a time. Obviously in a baseball forum and based on the opening post he's asking what the president of baseball operations does, which is a pretty good question since most of us think he's just a steroid-charged GM anyway.

There's nothing wrong with a steroid charged GM. When you think about it, how much of Theo's time in Boston was spent explaining things to Lucchino? Do you think Lucchino has a grasp for what goes on under the hood--certainly its nothing compared to Theo. Not only that, but with 3 owners in Boston it's entirely possible that there was fragmentation in terms of strategic thinking and boundary scanning (both roles typical of an executive). Having Theo as a GM and a unified voice in ownership streamlines a lot and carves away a lot of inefficiency...at least in theory. A lot of Lucchinos role was probably fiscal restraint but, in Chicago, again, it is probably more efficient if Theo knows his budgetary parameters and is given carte blanche otherwise. He doesn't have to explain things to people or get approval, or wait to make a move because he has to run it by someone like Lucchino.

I get the feeling that Ricketts isn't going to meddle. I think he wants the franchise to make money and he has seen firsthand how much more value there is to winning. Since Ricketts has owned the team, he's seen them have trouble getting out of their own way. Ricketts isn't really in a position to claim to know what would make the team successful and that's why he's at where he is today--signing Theo Epstein. And Theo wouldnt be coming here if he didnt have more leeway than he had in Boston. I think the Ricketts aren't under any pretense that they know how to build a winner and getting Epstein is an admission of as much. I think the Ricketts want to shake hands and make money and they want someone who they can trust to make that happen and will offer minimal obstruction.

Exactly. Let Theo make the franchise in his image as the unquestioned leader.

You don't know how to read between the lines in accordance to other things he's said in here.

Show me where I have ever hid my hatred or set someone up for a "sneak attack" when it comes to the Cubs.

You have a time or two but I honestly don't mind when you do minor jabs. (you know when to stop)

The other ones.. like Cawks.. and occasionally Rage-Quit goes too far.

Back to your question with relation to the new Cubs front office.. Several of the guys pretty much outlined what the process will be.

Perhaps I just romance this whole thing. It seems to me too many cooks hurts and does not help. Of course I hope it hurts the Cubs, but that isn't the point. I am still foggy why they need more than one guy running the show, but I appreciate everyone's opinion. Thanks.
