This happened to me one time just last year and it was scary as hell

I woke up and couldn't move at all. I tried to yell for somebody but I couldn't move my mouth. I was panicking but I had heard of sleep paralysis so I knew what was probably going on. It lasted probably 30 seconds or less but it was horrible!

and yeah I was lying on my back when I woke up, which I never sleep that way purposefully..so there probably is something to that.

That sounds like sleep apnea.

I don't think it's that. I don't have the risk factors or other symptoms associated with sleep apnea.

Never had it myself, but my friend described it, since he gets it quite often. Sounds pretty terrible. I wonder what causes it.

What happens to me a lot is waking up breathing really hard, like I was out of breath.

That is probably just anxiety (considering your other thread), but it could be a sign of heart trouble (unlikely at your age). I assume you are well monitored by your doc with your auto-immune condition.

I actually haven't seen my rheumatologist in about 4 years haha. In that time, I've only seen my primary 4 times for annual physicals. I seem to be controlling my symptoms pretty well with a massive diet change (Autoimmune Paleo Diet). I was skeptical at first, but thought I'd give it a shot. After a week or so, my symptoms improved a lot. 4 years later, and it still seems to be working for me.

A few years ago, they did find a bout of non-sustained ventricular tachycardia (NSVT) during my sleep, and also evidence of ischemia during an exercise stress test. But then said my heart checked out okay. Weird, but okay. Overall, almost everything for me comes back "inconclusive", which was irritating for a while.

Even still, I think anxiety makes the most sense, because I usually have some fucked up dream when it happens.

had it since me was a kid.. so much so ive had it in me dream state and then that waking dream state.

in the dream state..when i realize where i be... my astral body can then seperate from my body and will fly off if i chose to.. i never get far before waking up.. try it, if it happens there. if i dont realize im dreaming it will seem like the wake/sleep state and i will struggle to move... ive actually gone from dream state para to wake/sleep state para back to dream state back to wake/sleep etc etc etc... like groundhogs day yo..

in dat waking/sleep state para, i either juss go back to sleep or fight to move and i will eventually fully wake..

i seem to get them more easy when i dont want to sleep or nap and i fight to stay awake but fall asleep..

weirdest unexplained one... was in hs.. woke in the wake/sleep state i think.. couldnt move.. blankets were waving like heavy wind was in my room.. i looked up and a blacked out floating predator mirrored me from head to toe.. i freaked out.. closed me eyes n fell back asleep..

You bastards. All of you.
I haven't had that happen since I was a kid and it was terrifying. I completely forgot about it, but now it will probably happen again.

Dang man. I cant even imagine having it as a kid... I had my first one when i was like 21 or 22 and still freaked out. For real i thought the devil was sitting on me pressing me down...

That shit was probably the reason why I was supremely religious as a kid as usually my dreams/nightmares whenever this happened had some religious connection. I would be dreaming about hell or the Devil and it would only be towards the end that I would realize it was a dream and then try to wake up when this shit would happen. So I seriously thought as a kid that shit was real and I was talking to the Devil or sometimes an angel or some shit. It was only when I got older and started getting into science did I realize what was going on.

Yeah it's pretty wild and scary.
And if you think about it, it's probably one of the wildest things that can happen to a person because it feels so damn real. Sometimes when I don't get it for a while I kind of miss it... The thrill is immense.

So when this happens is your whole body completely frozen? How often does it happen?

For me at least, it's that I wake up without opening my eyes. Like I know I'm awake, I can hear everything around me. But I can't move at all. Except sometimes I can do something very small like wiggle a toe or a finger. Then after about 10-20 seconds I'm able to fully wake up and open my eyes and move. The seconds feel like minutes sometimes though.

Yup, just like this. It's only happened to me a few times but your description is right on.

Sounds like it could be just a strange dream.

It is a dysfunction in REM sleep. You are paralyzed during REM sleep and waking up means you are emerging from REM sleep. However if you wake up without fully being out of REM sleep you remain paralyzed. REM sleep is also the stage of sleep where you dream hence why people are often dreaming during an episode.

Speaking of being in a dream state. This past summer I woke up from a dream in a nightmarish manner. I just remember waking up and being freaked out. Then I realized I was awake and it was just a dream but on my ceiling was a red light reflection of Santa Claus. I closed my eyes and reopened to make sure. Then I just thought "oh it's probably the neighbors Christmas lights reflecting into my room" then I realized it was June and no one has Christmas lights out and my blinds were closed. After a minute or so it went away but it was weird as ****. Makes me wonder if I was hallucinating somehow from the dream.

To add to what others wrote;

Normally i try to say something to alert my wife to wake me but all i can muster is a faint garble because my mouth is paralized.
If somebody shakes you then you snap out of it. Like mitch wiggling the finger or toe to self wake is probably the most common method.

It used to happen to me often during my 20's. Usually during a nap when i don't sleep for long hours. Like remy said it has to do with waking during rem.

It kind of sucks that its so freaky, but it's quite a thrilling experience.
