Assuming you ran the speed test on wireless, I think your router is your likely bottleneck rather than the modem.

I would bet if you plug right in to the modem and do a speed test off the ethernet you get 50+MB down.

My advice would be to look at getting a better wireless router, shut off wireless on the router component of the modem, and use the wireless off your new router.

My modem is my wireless router.

Thanks to everybody who had some input and helping me with this issue. My next question would be does Comcast restrict both routers and modems or just modems?

The router just makes the signal wireless in general. At that point its not comcasts as a way of looking at it.

You can use any router you want.

And in my experience, the motorola surfboards are always compatible. I think you would have to get a pretty obscure modem for it not to work.
