If you were a player and your team and the NHL just locked you out for the season, why would you listen to them if they asked you to go play somewhere? At that point, aren't you in a dispute with your team?

All depends on whether the player is a professional who is driven to grow and make himself better or is just a time clock puncher.

And if a player needing to develop chooses to sit on his arse, that speaks VOLUMES to his character and the liklihood that he will or won't pan out--ever.

Yeah they can... its called a two-way entry level contract. No difference between Nick Leddy and Jimmy Hayes. Travis Moen did it in 2004-05 after playing 82 games for the Blackhawks in 2003-04.

The 2-way contract does not drive when you can or cannot send a guy down, these waiver rules do. (Link below) That being said, according to these rules, waivers don't kick in until 12 days before the regular season starts...so if the league announced a delay to the beginning of the season prior to 12 days before what is scheduled as the start of the season as of now, I would think that would make it possible to send them down anytime up until 12 days from the new "re-scheduled" start of the season.
