I know what it is.
Any of you get PM spam in the last year advertising a site with a fairly short link from established members? That's what it is, some script kiddie trying to nab as many accounts as possible, then use them to mass PM.
I blocked most of the IPs and some of the other userinfos. But they might keep trying. Don't care, they will just get blocked one at a time, and blacklisted on a few spam watchlists.
