So I got a question for ya.

When people agree to do a simple grab bag for Christmas, shouldn’t that be it?

If one party buys a bunch of gifts for another, that other party feels like a jerk, cheapskate, and in general, feels like a heel.

Now, here’s another query: what should that other party do? Open them? Not open them?

A little back story.

Yes, this is involves the wife and I. The relationship between her and her family is a bit strained. Mom is fine, albeit a bit strange, but what mother isn’t. Dad is a bit of a dick. Makes comments about appearances, is totally disengaged when it comes to gatherings. Plopped down in front of the tv, flipping through channels, not paying attention. Just generally unpleasant to be around. The sister is just the opposite of us, and sometimes it rubs the wrong way.

We didn’t want to go over there in the first place. I know that sounds bad, but it is what it is. It seems strained, all the time. I personally feel on edge, carefully choosing my words, on guard for anything that might happen or what might be said. We both generally feel judged, a little picked on, and uncomfortable.

We had agreed to do a grab bag. We are all adults, and are able to afford things we want. For instance, during the year, if there is something I want, I just simply go buy it. The things I can’t afford, I wouldn’t want someone buy either. So we agreed to a simple grab bag, of about 25 bucks, and just gift cards. Simple and useful, in my eyes anyway.

So we go over there, things were ok, about what we had expected. Grab bag was a success, as everyone was happy with what they got. As we are getting our coats on and getting ready to leave, the mudder-in-law comes out of nowhere with 3 garbage bags full of gifts. She says take them with you and open them later.

So now, the wife and I feel like absolute dickbags. Not only for not getting gifts for everyone else, but for not wanting to be there in the first place. We are just feeling low. I understand that her Mom did it out of the kindness of her heart, and that it came from a place of love. However, the cynic in me can’t help but feel she did that to make us feel guilty. I know she didn’t, but like I said, that is the cynic in my brain.

So now the question becomes, what do we do? If we don’t open them, her Mom’s feelings will be hurt. If we open them, each tear of the paper will rip at our soul.

Don't get me wrong, I feel kinda like an idiot. I know Christmas isn't about gifts and all that. I personally think this time of year is meant for reflection. Taking stock of your life and so on. But this is a bit of a curve ball.

What would you do in this situation?

Also, I know it's poor form to be complaining about Christmas and gifts, but I don't know what to do in this situation. I am just at a loss.

Open them, enjoy them, and thank her mother for them. That's all.

Oh Jeff and Megan you poor folks. My mom does the same thing and it has caused huge strife in all three of my marriages. She always has to outgive everyone else. It is just her MO. Then she has to make sure that everyone knows that she went out of her way, spent a bunch of money, and did 'good things' for people.

She's not catholic but I liken it to that mentality. Her gift giving practices are not to make you feel guilty, they are to make her feel better about whatever guilt she has for not being able to do enough. While that isn't always the case, that is definitely how the wives have seen it, and they weren't alone in that thinking.

Here's what I decided though, if she is going to go out of her way to do those things, you CANNOT stop her. You can simply be grateful, say thank you and do whatever you want with your life.

In your case she is Mego's mom and she loves her daughter and will always want to do nice things for her. The only thing I would suggest if you guys just can't bare it anymore, is that you both talk to her and her alone in a comfortable setting. Just tell her, you really appreciate the gesture but it makes you uncomfortable because you can't or don't want to do the same thing. It won't happen overnight, but once the message sinks in and gets accepted, things will improve.

Remeber this though, once she is gone (as in passed away), you won't have that love, support, and genorousity anymore.

Sorry if I sound preachy, but I have been through this for years and I just want to be a friend and share my experiences...and you asked ******.

Agreed. Miška and I couldn't afford too many gifts with all of the immigration-related expenses this year, so those who give a rip about us knew that their gifts would be on the lighter side (although so far everyone loved them). So yeah, take it at face value as of now, and only tear into the like they are paper sacks filled with turkey gibblets and red-tinted Karo syrup if they try to guilt trip you later.

Have to agree with Jax as well. Mom loves you and her daughter. It was not done out of spite but because of the love she feels. After reading your insight she may even have some guilt with the man she is married to and wants to do something special for the two of you.

Open, enjoy and share in the love......

Merry Christmas

Thanks for all the insight, each and every one of you. I was leaning that way too. After reading what you wrote IHF, it makes sense that she would over compensate, as Megos dad doesn't do shit. He doesn't even buy anything for his wife for Christmas. She has to go buy whatever it is she wants and tell him later what "he got for her". That makes me mad, but I digress.

Also, I was thinking about this.....should we invite her over to enjoy the gift giving experience? To me, when I give a gift, the best part is watching the recipient open it and their reaction.

Seriously, thank you all.

Was she as generous with her other children? I am not a parent, but if I were I know I would buy for my children even if I participated in the grab bag thing. I think that may be the case with her. Parents often feel they are exempt. If she can afford it and it makes her happy don't deny her that pleasure.

I would assume so.

Everybody does not have a secret agenda for everything they do. People always like to read way too much into things. For some people it is just their nature to be loving and giving.

Jako, how did the amount of presents she got you guys compare to past Christmases? Maybe this was just standard procedure for her. Plus you and Beastkeeper both have birthdays a few days before and after Christmas. Maybe some was for that.

No doubt Bri. I dont believe her Mom is that much of a butthole. I think IHF said it best with her overcompensating for her Dad. She is also careful to not mix the birthday and Christmas gifts. Both my folks and hers separate them. They are really sensitive bout that.

I agree with what ever has been stated.

But...,

If it still weighs heavy on the two of you's minds, I will be more then happy to to take whatever gifts were given off your hands...

I have to agree that part of the gift giving is the reaction when someone gets it. My bro got me a gift that's only purpose was my reaction--a metal replica Master Sword from the Zelda series. And yes, i did hold it up and hum "Duh, nuh, nah, nahhh!"

I would say go ahead and invite her until/unless she starts to guilt trip you.

In the end do what ever makes you feel best not what people tell you on a message board even if this is a specialty of mine. People worry too much about other people and forget to do what is best for them because the world likes to condition you to think that is selfish.

Listen to you fools? pffffffttttt

It was more getting an outside opinion, mostly for the benefit of the wife. I woulda been fine opening the gifts there, but like I said, her dad is just a big pill.We never feel comfortable there. Her Mom seemingly has this image in her head where everything is perfect, and it just ain't gonna happen.

Maybe consider the fact that doing things like the presents helps her keep her sanity in an otherwise unpleasant situation.

Just sayin'
