Source - Derrick Rose deal 'top priority' for Chicago Bulls - ESPN Chicago

CHICAGO -- The Chicago Bulls' "top priority" during Wednesday morning's initial contact period between teams and agents will be to set up the framework of Derrick Rose's contract extension, according to a league source.

Rose, whose rookie contract is up after this season, became the youngest MVP in NBA history last season while leading the Bulls to a regular-season-best 62 wins. He is expected to receive a max extension when the time comes, although no formal offers can be made or signed until Dec. 9, according to an NBA memo issued to all teams Tuesday night.

No matter when he officially signs, Rose is due for a mammoth raise from his rookie contract, based upon a new wrinkle to the collective bargaining agreement, which is expected to be ratified at some point in the next few days.

"The Derrick Rose Rule," as it's being called around the league, rewards players of Rose's caliber by enabling a player finishing his rookie contract to make 30 percent of a team's salary cap -- up from 25 percent -- if he's been voted an All-Star starter twice, made two All-NBA teams or won an MVP award.

"It's unbelievable," Rose recently told CSNChicago.com. "But the rule, I guess, it fits me for what I've achieved at a young age and hopefully there will be a couple more people like me."

Once the new CBA is ratified, it's likely Rose will sign a five-year extension for upwards of $100 million.

Once the Bulls have the framework of Rose's new deal in place, their next order of business will be to see if they can upgrade at shooting guard. They will look at all options and aren't expected to make a decision on Keith Bogans' contract option for at least a few days.

Bogans started all 82 games a year ago, averaging four points and two rebounds per game.

Am I the only one wishing he would take less money for the sake of the team? I know he won't but just saying... the kid is already rich as hell from his Adidas deal.

What's the current cap situation? Do we have 5M remaining assuming we sign Rose to a max contract?

I would love for him to take less for the sake of the team. I dont know if he does though.

Not 100% sure what the cap is myself.....I know that its pretty close.

Also, I understand that they wanna keep the depth and overall team chemistry going....but if needed to boost this team further GarPax has got to come to the realization (which they continuously wanna avoid talking about) that trading some of our current role players or even a starter to get them another title they need to.

That, or they just generally want to continue to make Miami's life a living hell til that team isn't worth a damn any more. Regardless, Reinsdorf should make is move while its good timing. As we have all said tons of times before....if he stands by his word....he won't care to go over the cap to get this team another title. We'll see soon enough. :dealwithit:

I would hope Derrick takes all the money he can.

He's one bad drive in the lane away from losing it all.

Derricks already got plenty of money from his current contract and endorsements. I'm actually interested in seeing how much money he has

I wouldn't worry about Miami, they have a VERY short window to win a title, and that window is closing.

There are too many teams now that can win it all and depending on what CP3 and Dwight do, you might have a few more.

If Miami doesn't get it this year, I don't see them winning at all.

People jump on this statement, but this is how I see it.

Yeah they will still have the 5M. Rose's max contract won't kick in until next season.

Miami has a very limited capacity offensively but their defense is going to be great for many, many years to come. If they add a player like Samuel Dalembert, I think they will be unstoppable next season.

However, their half court offense is very flawed and will continue to diminish as Wade ages. James desperately needs a low-post game.

If one of the big three goes down then the Bulls will be in the Finals in all likelihood.

I hope he takes a pay cut to help the team. Wouldn't blame him if he gets all he can though.

If I were in his shoes, I would give the team room to sign complimentary players. Heck, Wade and LeBron took a small hit to land Bosh. There is some logic to it, and it takes some stress away from him on the court.

I love Derrick and all, but I don't want to see the Bulls stuck with no options to move into Allen Houston Knicks-like territory on the books(yes, I am aware that this is an exaggeration.)

I know everyone wants to talk about money and the players try to get as much as they can but maybe its the middle class American in me, but why not take less to build a winner? A guy like Rose gets mad cash from Addidas and Powerade and whatever Chicago endorsements he has that i dont see here in FL.

Now i dont agree with how things went down with the Heat. I dont agree with multiple all-stars and some of the best players in the league taking less to play together.

I think if there is any player in the NBA that would take a hometown discount so his team could build him a perennial championship-contender it's Derrick Rose. I'm not saying that's going to happen but Rose has never struck as the type of person who is all about the money. But if he doesn't take a discount, I fully understand. Gotta get paid son!

I don't agree with the best players in the league signing together just cuz they think it will make it easy. The true superstar competitors are going the way of the dinosaur in the NBA.

That too. Guys like Bosh and obviously LeBron are centerpiece players that carry a franchise. You dont add both of them to another(in a town that doesnt even deserve basketball)

rose taking less money is not keeping them from under the cap, so there's no reason for him not to squeeze every penny of value he has

As much as I'd like to believe that Rose would take a paycut in order to allow the team to sign more pieces, I have the feeling that won't be the case. He might even demand that 30% of the cap or whatever it is. I might be a bit jaded by his comments during the lockout about guys formerly making 70-80 million off the bat, but it seems to me like he wants his money. He wants to win too, but he's gonna get paid big time.

Though he would've gotten a lot of money anyway so maybe I'm just stating the obvious...
