I'm gonna laugh if you paid over $50 M for a RP

Regardless he is a great player, it's just a closer can only do so much to improve the team. Has a large RP contract ever worked out? Surprised the Sox would do this, but I'll wait for the details to really decide.

Reports are it is a 4 year deal

Meh still over $10 mil AAV for a RP is asking for bad things to happen

Looks like it is a 4/$40M deal. Not a bad signing, but seems awfully rough to give up that much for a RP

Surprised the Yanks wanted anything to do with that. Yanks trying to cut payroll but then they want to add $82 M for RP. Makes no sense

Would be huge for the Sox to get Samardzija.Would be a great move and make the on paper division leaders IMO. But not a fan of this move at all. Robertson is a good pitcher, but seems absurd to devote that much to a guy in the pen

i get your point. i mean we won a title with 3 closers:shingo, hermanson than jenks but i think i wouldnt want to gamble that again.

As long as he doesn;t go all Marmol on us, I think we will be fine, but man oh man, what a tone of money on a closer.

Then again if we had him last year we'd have been right in the race.

Horrible contract. Closers and relief pitching is too volatile to offer up this kind of money for a guy who's been a closer for one season. It fills a need, but at what cost? The saving grace is that he's just now turning 30 and a huge drop off in performance shouldn't be expected until the second half of the deal. You just hope that the Sox can contend this year so the large salary figure can be somewhat justified.

Actaully there should be no drop off at all given his age and past performance. He's a K machine which is good. Sox just need to think that last year was a fluke compared to what they normally do with pitchers.

That said, it's a boat load of cash for the none Kimbrel.
The nice thing is the Sox are one of the few teams that have budget awareness that could take a hit and have it really not affect.

Christmas comes early. Screw the "horrible" contract theory...for me, it's irrelevant (and untrue). The idea is to win. It may pay off, it may not, but the opportunity is there.

A good plan violently executed now is better than a perfect plan executed next week.

I'd disagree with that plan from Patton.

But yes if we win who cares if a bad year or three are in there.
