So a squirrel has chewed it's way into my attic. I called a contractor and he told me $550 to solve the problem. I called a second contractor to get a 2nd opinion. He tells me I have a mice problem, a squirrel problem, and I need guys in hazmat suits to remove all my insulation, seal up my attic, and give me his "industry leading warranty." His quote.... $8,500! :eek:hmy: I call a third contractor because I'm like WTF is going on here? Third contractor says the squirrel is gone, and I have no mice problem that he can see. He seals up the house for $162 and leaves some mice bait that he's going to check in a few days just to make sure I have no mice up there. Anyone ever deal with contractors with this big a disparity in quotes? This just blew my mind. 3 "reputable" companies with an $8,000 spread???

I laughed so hard when I saw this movie. That IS my dog. She won't listen for shit, but if you say Squirrel she stands at full attention ready to kill. Unfortunately she is bad at climbing ladders or I'd gladly let her handle my squirrel problem.

You could try a Hav-A-Hart trap if you think a squirrel is still up there. If you are in the Chicago area, I have one you could borrow.
Otherwise, they are only $20-30 or so I think.

He thought it was gone but he sealed it up in such a way that it can get out but not back in. Will give it a few days and then finally seal it all the way up then. Thanks for the offer but I live in Texas.

IIRC we contacted Animal Cruelty, they lent us a trap. We placed it in the attic with a slice of peanut buttered bread. A day later no more squirrel.

I had similar issues with foundation repair contractors. So I hired an independent structural engineer who wasn't actually doing the repair work to give me an assessment. As for the squirrel, I recommend a .22 pellet gun.

As a security contractor I take pride in having the highest price. I do the best work so why not, I work less and make more money. Hope that squirrel didn't have babies in your attic. :yep:

That would cost more than $162. My dog is high priced too.

LOL. Do you charge $8,000 more than your competition too?

I looked into them more. Apparently they "find" a rat/mice infestation in pretty much every home they go to. Convenient right??

Chipmunks and gray/brown squirrels are super destructive. Black or red squirrels are killed off by gray squirrels, which is why you rarely see them, despite being native. I'll usually just patch the damage of a brown and try some simple deterrents. But if you have gray squirrels nesting in your home or in close proximity, then you can't just set some basic traps and hope they go away.

It's been more than that on a large job. I have clients that just tell me to do the job without a bid. When I do a job it is done right without any callbacks. I'm worth my price.

In the woods around me we have red and gray squirrels. In the 16 years I've lived here I've never seen them fighting each other.

If you want red squirrels, you have to kill greys'

"Standing beside the caged squirrel enclosure at Trewithen House near Truro, she explains why the two species cannot live together harmoniously: "Greys don't actually kill reds themselves, as is commonly believed. They spread a deadly pox, causing distinctive ulcerations on their eyes and nose, which kills reds within five to seven days.""

A falling tree still makes a sound, even if you don't hear it.

and as far as the contractors go that's why you get at least 3 bids on any job there are way too many price gougers out there. be aware though the lowest bid might come at a cost in quality though
