There's like 4 cable channels packed with home repair shows. Then the handful of home repair shows on other channels. Plus, it's not like this stuff gets outdated that quick, you also have some 40 years worth of shows, all the youtube channels dedicated to maintenance and repairs.....

Seriously, as soon as someone says $1000 or more, and your first instict is to find another contractor instead of finding that hammer... turn in your man card.

So a squirrel has chewed it's way into my attic. I called a contractor and he told me $550 to solve the problem. I called a second contractor to get a 2nd opinion. He tells me I have a mice problem, a squirrel problem, and I need guys in hazmat suits to remove all my insulation, seal up my attic, and give me his "industry leading warranty." His quote.... $8,500! :eek:hmy: I call a third contractor because I'm like WTF is going on here? Third contractor says the squirrel is gone, and I have no mice problem that he can see. He seals up the house for $162 and leaves some mice bait that he's going to check in a few days just to make sure I have no mice up there. Anyone ever deal with contractors with this big a disparity in quotes? This just blew my mind. 3 "reputable" companies with an $8,000 spread???

Contractors for homeowners are generally:
1. Incompetent, I just had to rod a pipe some dumbass plumber dropped a screw in 10 years ago.
2. Overpriced, as you just discovered.

Save your hard earned $$ and fix it yourself, poison and screening wire are cheap.

Be careful if you use poison (personally, I wouldn't use it). If it dies in the attic it will stink for weeks, and if it makes it outside it could poison a cat, crow or hawks that eats it.

:hawked:

You can buy that poison that is typically for mice that makes it so they don't stink when they die.

So you're supposed to beat it to death with the crock pot, shove the gun up its ass and use the biscuits to paint your body with its blood?

Did you inspect the attic? Mice reproduce crazy fast and a true inspection would be easy to do. If there is shit everywhere, you have a lot of mice. Squirrel nest are easy to see and remove. Shoebox and a mask.
Removing and replacing attic insulation, and shit removal and disinfecting is a nasty job and contracting it out would be expensive.

No mice. Squirrel looks gone but put a one way door on it for a few days do it can get out if we missed it. Left some bait just in case we missed some mice but doubtful. The funny thing was the Lizards. (live in Texas) Had a few Lizards up there but they don't do anything but eat bugs per the pest guy. Instead of the 8,500 the one company quoted got the whole thing resolved for 150 plus tax. Sadly Crys has informed me I have to turn in my man card because I didn't do it myself though. :(

Just remembered my brother's father-in-law really did eat squirrels when he was growing up. The guy is about as redneck as you can be and grew up in rural Arkansas. Said it was good eating.... :puke:

Breh, you didn't spend over $1000 so your man card is still intact.
