I read that earlier today. He she'd light on a lot of things. I will miss him on the roster, but wish him well with the Yankees. Interesting comments about Soriano, too.

That's all I ever heard about Soriano in the clubhouse. He was always a good team player. The media and fans just never appreciated him.

Great piece. I am still super bummed we traded him of all guys to trade. He was the lone bright spot for this team after Aramis left and before Rizzo became legit.

I liked Soriano. My dad and I were both big fans. He was overpaid though, and it drew the ire of fans and media because he really didn't produce for what he was getting paid.

I still don't like this move. I think Starlin at 25 is a much better option than Zobrist at 2nd. I also feel like Castro's defense improved at 2nd because the throwing errors weren't as likely with the shorter throw. Warren better do something special.

The ending to his letter was perfect. Gonna miss that guy. Might even catch a Twins-Yankees game this season just to be the weirdo in a Cubs jersey giving him a standing ovation.

I don't think Castro even wrote the rough draft for that. I have to wonder if he even read it?

It was well done though.

I have to agree. He sat in a chair and answered some questions. Had he written the article himself, I'm sure he would have 'bobbled' a few.... anyhow, nice article.

I agree but at the same time Soriano is human and the media didn't have to do that to him. He wasn't an MVP but he played a big part in the Cubs going to the playoffs in 2007 and 2008, He was an all star one of those years, maybe both. Just like you, I was a fan as well and was happy to see him have that monster second half with the Yankees after he was traded.

I completely agree on Starlin Castro. I'm bummed about the trade. A lineup that adds Jason Heyward but already has Starlin Castro is a lot better. Castro is a 3 time all star and he isn't even 26 yet. He's not even into his prime. One thing that people don't realize with Castro is even though he made errors he made A LOT of good plays. His range is pretty good and he gets to more balls than Addison Russell.

Not only do they have to hope Warren pans out, they also need to hope that Russell and/or Javier Baez pan out. I'd rather have the proven player in Castro.

The Cubs could have moved Kris Bryant to the outfield and had Castro at 2B, Russell at SS and Baez at 3B.

One more thing, the Cubs could have had Justin Upton a few years ago but when Theo asked about him the first thing the Diamondbacks said was they wanted Castro. Theo told them no way. Not sure how people feel about Upton now but a few years ago he was one of the best.

Yea, Im sure Castro didn't write the letter. Im sure he had a publicist do it for funsies because he was traded. I mean I know he hopes to come back when his contract runs out in the next 5 years. I mean its normal for players to send a letter to the newspaper like this and totally have it fabricated from someone else. It wasn't like Castro spoke English well and also helped the other Latino players learn it such as Junior Lake. Solid posting fellas.

In fairness it was probably a ghost writer in conjunction with Castro, although I think it was a lot more than sitting in a chair and answering questions as someone suggested. The writing is crisp and well nuanced which are skills I don't expect a baseball player to be working on in his spare time. That said I believe the sentiment was all Starlin. I would think he sat with a writer and gave his feelings and asked the writer to interpret them. I don't think there was anything there that wasn't all from his heart.

I'm sure he had someone look it over and put in proper grammatical format. I know I always do when I write papers

I always like Castro as a player, more than most and I am not sure they Cubs are better after this trade. I just think it is fair to point out that he probably did not write any of that. I have no proof, but my guess is players have less to do with these fan letters than most people think. It would not surprise me if some players have almost nothing to do with it and don't even read the final draft.

I like what his message was.

My feeling was they needed to add more winning players from winning traditions. About it. I don't care about the long term impact or short term impact of trading Castro. Or if New York wins the deal or not.

Castro was ok as a player. His D regressed with his speed on the bases. It was the right move to move Russell to SS. That made Castro reinvent himself as a 2B and it gave new life to his career.

Now on 2B I'll bet Maddon wanted Zorbrist and that was all that it amounted to. It was not just Castro but Baez also lost 2B. My belief was Ben wanted to start to sign. And it happened. They needed to move Castro's contract at that point. End of story. What they got back was based off of Castro's trade value. Sure he had a strong month but that doesn't erase the other 5 months that put him in the dog house.

I'll always be impressed by the way he handled being moved out of the lineup, I mean he's still a kid and going from All-Star status to riding the pines...tough, but he handled it with class and when he got back out there he was rewarded with a hot streak at 2B for his trouble. I was hoping they'd keep him but Theo has been pushing the right buttons a lot, so let's hope Warren is the real deal.
